I would suggest purchasing a stand that was made specifically to hold a 55 gallon aquarium. I know this might sound like a dumb answer but so many run out and purchase something that wasn’t made specifically to hold an aquarium only to find out the hard way it will not hold the weight. Almost all the chain pet stores carry stands made to fit each size tank or you could shop on e-bay or someplace like that. I watch the wanted adds in the paper and have picked up all kinds of stuff that was cheep.

Is the tank a glass or plastic tank? I ask this because acrylic tanks need a stand that will support the entire bottom where a glass tank can be supported only around the edge.

For the best price I would search craigslist. That's where I got my most recent tank and stand. It may be a little more difficult to find just a stand though. I haven't purchased one from Petsmart before but I would think that they would work just fine. They are just a little pricey.

Walmart sells a pretty good wood stand for about $85. Depends on the pet department though. They may have to order it for you, or you may have to order online. My Walmart has the full fish dept, so they had the tanks and stands there. You can check out my gallery. Pics aren't great, but you can get an idea what it looks like.

Find a model and read reviews of it, Amazon is a good place to look for basic designs. There was one that was $10 cheaper than the others and looked fine at first, had some bad reviews though, including one who's tank wasn't supported properly and broke. It's worth the extra $10 sometimes to avoid such stories.

Perhaps a DIY Stand?

yep, +1 to Ken's idea. I made one for 2 55 gl's - one below and one on Top. I used 2x6's and plywood then painted it all black. rather inexpensive, and stronger than anything out there.
