where does everybody get their bettas

My boyfriend is looking for a betta where does everybody get theirs? we normally get ours at petsmart.

 

I got a stunning red and black koi (I think? He has now developed blue, so I'm not sure what that would be) at Petco. Ordering online is also an option.

 

I got mine from ebay from envyaquatics. My local petsmart and petco never seemed to have healthy bettas.

 

I've found some real stunners at Petsmart!

 

Just as many people prefer to "rescue" a dog from a shelter, I prefer to "rescue" bettas from Petco. I feel so bad for them in those little cups!

 

Buying fish from a retail store isn't rescuing them, unfortunately. It just promotes the practice that they are doing, because they don't care why you are buying them, they just want your money. So we may feel good saving a fish or two from a short life in a cup, but in doing so we doom even more to take its place. And to make matter worse, it gives these stores the idea that what they are doing is acceptable.
Rescuing fish would be like finding some on craigslist (or maybe a friend) in horrible conditions or a rehome situation.

Sorry for ranting, we foster shelter dogs and literally save them from getting put down just because they are unwanted. We have 7 right now. I'm also a fish retailer, although small scale, I still see more than I want to of the darker side of the industry.

omg same here!!! I got my from Walmart I just dropped everything and grabbed him and a tank. he is so happy now I even get happy bubbles!!!

 

jettajocky thank you for what you do and I never really saw it that way but now that I do I will buy them from other people to save them that way.

 

I got this bad boy from PetCo today!!

 

we bought one today from petsmart but it is in blue water and the picture doesn't look good at all but he is a twin tail male betta that is blue green and red I do believe.

 

I've bought from eBay, Petco and Petsmart. I wouldn't personally buy from eBay again. Petco generally has prettier bettas than Petsmart, but you'll need to make sure the individual fish looks healthy before you purchase. Health is touch and go between Petsmart and Petco. Obviously you'll want to quarantine if you plan to house anything else in the same tank as the betta.

 

I've gotten mine from AquaBid(shipped from Thailand), eugene fish store(highly recommend), PetSmart , PetCo, pet supermarket, Walmart, and from a member on here. I try not to support the chains, but sometimes you just see that special betta... I will be getting higher quality fish soon as I am a breeder now.
