When You Live Under Someone Else's Roof

I found a 40 gallon breeder on craigslist from someone who's moving and needs it gone in 3 days.
It comes with the stand, and not those thin metal looking stands, an actual solid stand with a space below for storage. It also comes with what looks like a canister filter, decorations, and accessories. It looks well maintained, not overstocked, just generally in good condition.

It's $50.

I mean, you can't even beat that price with the dollar per gallon sale going on right now, especially since the stand and filter and what possibly looks like a plant light are included. This 40 gallon tank costs less than my 2.6 gallon fluval spec.

I showed the listing to my dad and he told me "We are not getting more fish tanks."

What? There are two tanks in this entire house, both under 3 gallons, both in my own room. Money is not an issue, as I can pay for it on my own. I told him how I'd like to have a blackwater tank with schooling fish, and he seemed half convinced, but then went "we can't take care of all these tanks." Lol dad, when was the last time you so much as dipped your hand in a fish tank? Who is "we"? You mean, me?

Sigh. All in good fun though, I love my parents. Anybody else ever had this issue?

Yup.

It took me a good year and a half to convince my mom to let me start a Saltwater tank.

I'm moving back to my parents... so I have to move my tank. I would get another tank, but I don't want to take up so much space. I will move out soon again hopefully lol.

That always does suck. My roommate recently changed her mind on a tank, ruining my plans for a 35gallon reed tank ;(

Bummer, sorry that its a no go

I always wondered if, when parents deny kids something pretty basic, if its some sort of ploy to make sure the baby leaves the nest instead of living there until your 30, lol.

They're either evil geniuses, or just being difficult

All joking aside, sorry you have to let this tank go, but they'll be more in the future

Are you perhaps going off to college soon? I know I would say "no" if my kids asked me to buy a pet that would live well into their college years and I would have to care for it. My parents did the same to me when I wanted to buy another pet right before college. I'm glad they did say no since I was so busy and couldn't care for a pet properly during that time.

Someday you can have as many tanks as you want! It will happen!

That's actually very clever. If I were a parent I wouldn't be too hesitant to use a tactic like that myself

Yikes. I wouldn't mind as long as the responsibility didn't fall on me to take care of it!

Soon-ish! My parents are pretty lenient, though we also have chickens and my brother's planning on hamsters, so maybe the animals have just added up to too many.

My two nano tanks will be going with me to college. I don't think a 40 gallon could make that trip, so in that aspect it does make sense

Ah-ha! I knew I was getting lots of animal vibes! We had a "zoo" at our house too! This is what I had at my house before college: red lored amazon, blue front amazon, moluccan cockatoo, 2 guinea pigs, and few hamsters! I did the commuter college thing so I didn't leave home till later. It was a lot worse in my junior year of high school, I used to work for Petco till my dad made me quit since he said I was rescuing too many animals!

As CarrieFisher said you will have plenty of time once collage is done to get bigger and better tanks, it's a few short years compared to what may lay ahead.

Get the tank and put nothing in it until you're out of collage. That way you get the good deal.
