I recently bought a new tank heater for my 20 gallon tank, I put it in and waited for a few minutes before pressing on but so far its been like half an hour and I still don't see any light coming in the on button. It's an automatic heater but will they take a long time to turn on even if the switch is on?

Maybe your tank is at the right degree thus it’s not turning on.

Did you try putting in cold water and seeing if it turns on?

This may sound really stupid, but did you plug it in?

Yeah I thought so too, I feel like there isn't much difference from the outside temperature which is like 22 degrees and I had it set at 24. C so maybe I should raise the temperature more?

It also helps to know what brand of heater you're using.
