When does aggression toward new fish show?

Tonight I brought home a lovely little angelfish. The other inhabitants of the 36 gallon tank have been cories and lemon tetras.

The lemon tetras are gentle with the cories but like to chase each other. I'm nervous about the lemon tetras, though, because I originally had six of them and they attacked one, which ended up dying. So I'm worried they have latent aggressive tendencies or something.

I added the new little angel tonight and so far, they are leaving it alone. I guess my question is, if they were going to harass the angel, would they have done it already? Am I in the clear? Or can aggression toward a new fish pop up at any time?

aggression can pop up anytime ime, particularly if you keep semi-aggressive fish or if they feel stressed or threatened, I've had fish live happily together and all of a sudden turn on one another. Are you sure the it was the tetra that killed the other one and he didn't just die of something else. I've found tetra to be one of the most peaceful fish, though, as with anything you occasionally get an oddball. If one of them is a bit more aggressive you'll see it soon enough.

I had several Cardinal tetra get attacked and died, it turned out to be my platy, supposedly one of the most peaceful community fish!

Good luck!

your angel should be fine I would just keep checking om him though .. aggression can start in a tank with any member of fish at ant time so don't worry

Thank you, Fishes! I'm not positive it was a tetra who killed the other one (I didn't actually see any attacks), but the tetra who died did seem to have nips on it. Then again, I haven't seen any nips or anything like that on any of the remaining tetras.

Thanks for your reply!

safzola, thank you! I'm definitely checking on them a LOT. LOL I will try not to worry too much, though.

The nips you saw may have happened because the tetra had died. Alison
