What's Your Oddball Fish?

I've always been a bit of an oddball fish kind of guy. I feel that keeping different types (especially less common) of fish makes the hobby more exciting.

What's your oddest, most unique, different, favorite, colorful, biggest, or funniest aquatic pet? Share pictures if you have them .

I like my striped kuhlis loaches, I had to order them online though seeing as the specimens my lps gets in aren't healthy (have lots of issues besides the tank mates they put them with) and not the same type. I don't have any recent pictures of them though...

Kuhlis have always been one of those fish that I've always loved, but never owned.

I figured there'd be a lot more people chiming in on this thread... Does everyone only keep guppies and goldfish?

My red lizard whiptail is certainly the oddest looking fish I have but really awesome.

The most entertaining are the keyhole cichlids and Norman's Lampeyes.

No I keep mollies, rainbowfish, 1 dwarf rainbowfish, 5 golden barbs, 1 rosy barb, 4 corys, 2 danios, 6 rasbora and a few snails and a frog.
Not that I look down on any of those. They're all great and I even keep guppies and goldfish.

I don't think that's a fish, rather an amphibian. An axolotol.

"Oddball creature", but yes it's an axolotl.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this thread about "oddball fish"?, lol

With the caveat of " funniest aquatic pet" thrown in on the first post. To be honest, I'd even find it acceptable to post a funny picture of a wet cat, or swimming dog. No rules for this post.

I'll even accept it too, just wanted to point that point

How about a fahaka puffer. Ive only talked to maybe 2 others that have one. I consider it an oddball.

Since I don't have any current pics heres his thread.

My daughter is obsessed with these guys. They have one in the display tank at my local LFS that's hilarious, and completely in love with her. Once my other tanks get upgraded, I think she'll be getting one for a b-day present.

The place by me regularly has juvenile mbus, but I have yet to see one full grown. The fahaka they have is probably about 10 inches or so.

Yup hes got the largest freshwater puffer species. Ive got number 2. I almost got one but the tank size required is massive.

What size tank is yours in? I'm thinking 125 for ours, but not positive.

A 150 atm ill be upgrading to a 220 or 240 this year. He will outgrow this tank.

OK. Good to know. I don't think I've seen a full grown fahaka either, now that you mentioned that. I might just keep the goby in the 125 and finally do my huge tank!

Depending on where you live, the Belle Isle Aquarium in Detroit has a huuuge puffer.

It's hard to define what an oddball is. I like keeping species that have rarely been kept - I just bred 2 species that had not previously been bred in captivity before. I suppose that scores as oddball.
The oddest fish I have kept haven't been the rarest - Oryzias woworae, who drag their fertilized eggs around hanging from filaments until they snag on plants, Steatocranus cichlid species, which have very reduced swim bladders as they live in rapids, and hop along the bottom, splashing tetras who lay their eggs above water, and, as the name suggests, splash them, mouthbrooding Bettas, Rivulus killies that like to leave the water to hunt bugs, and sit attached to the silicone above the water - nature is so diverse that even the ordinary fish are oddballs.

I'd agree that rare can constitutes as oddball!

TexasDomer I'm curious if youve got any oddballs?

I have some rare-ish fish, but no oddballs in the sense of strange fish. But if rare count as oddballs, then I do! The rare ones happen to be many of my favorites as well. Chela dadiburjori, Pelvicachromis kribensis (formerly P. taeniatus 'Moliwe'), Peckoltia braueri, and Mesonauta egregius.

If rare counts...I'll go with my persimmon parrots! They are dwarf blood parrots pretty much. They look identical to blood parrots...but they only get about the size of a softball.

I assume they're rare since very few people have heard of them...

Mine are my Reticulated Hillstream Loaches, they sort of just do their own thing, but I love them

I will definitely have a macrognathus aral at some point. I'm also patiently waiting for my LFS to get another erpetoichthys calabaricus. I absolutely love these two!

Looks to be a darter (Etheostoma)of some sort, perhaps a Johnny Darter (Etheostoma nigrum) weird one would turn up in a tropical tank ive known them to be a cooler water species related to perchs and walleye

Edit: Other possibilities could : Tessellated Darter (Etheostoma olmstedi) possibly a hybrid of 2 they are quite difficult to distinguish

I would definitely recommend it lots of spunk and personality ! When I first boughthe disappeared for about 2 weeks into the substrate and I was kinda disappointed but hes quickly grown on me ! Had never heard of erpetochthys calabaricus before now but its definitely been added to my Want list !
