I have lava rock as well, my power filters create plenty of current for my tank the fish love it, I did have a aqua clear powerhead but I took it out, it was creating to much current.

Tank - 29 gallon
Heater - Visi-Therm Stealth Submersible Heater by Marineland 200 watt. The aquarium is in my finished basement that is usually 60 degrees. The 200w is overkill but works great.

Lighting -Coralife F/W T-5 Aqualight Double Strip Light-30" (2x18 T5)

Filtration - Penguin BIO-Wheel 350
