Wondering what’s wrong with my java fern? I took a leaf off that was all yellow a d had black spots all over it. And now there’s black patches all over and brown spots starting. I know small black dots are where little plants grow off it but in the pictures of mine there’s big black patches

The same thing has been happening to mine for the past month. I’m not sure why, but I’m curious to see what people reply

It's changing and at the same time producing small runners. The plant doesn't like where it got positioned would be my guess. Is there current where it's situated?

There is no current where it’s at

None at all?

I have a hob aquaclear110 but the water flow is directed towards the back glass using a plastic cup

Ok, I only know this from Java fern when the conditions (light and flow) are bad where they are.

It might be my lighting, I had to cut the lighting from 12 hours to 7 hours because I’m battling algae

Java fern are low light plants. Less light wouldn’t cause this. It looks like it’s planted. Did you bury the rhizome?

No the rhizome is not buried. It isn’t planted either. I have it tied to a rock and I have the bottom of the rock pushed down into the gravel but the plant itself (including the rhizome) is above the gravel

I have a similar effect with my Java Ferns. My research led me to believe it was caused by excessive light reaching the plant since as referenced above. They don't die on me, just look a bit shabby and I love having them in my stonework so I just tolerate it rather than replanting to try and shade them more. Toning down the light may help but you may not see the change for some time since I don't believe once browning sets in it is reversible - may just need to wait for new leaf growth under the new conditions.
