Whats wrong with my guppie?

Recently one of my guppies has been acting really wierdly. Every now and then he will just stop swimming suddenly as if he has frozen then (It's hard to explain), but he seems to have little fits. He just shakes and can't control what he is doing. :-\ After that , (It only lasts about 5 seconds), he will rest for a while on the plant that is there and will stay there for a while. It doesn't happen everyday, but at least once a week. It's really wierd. He has been doing something similar since I have had him, (having little fits), but that was only every now and then or if I did a really big water change, but now it seems to have gotten worse. :-\

Both before and after it happens he seems fine and swimms with the other three and eats fine (usualy the first to the top!! ) I don't know what's wrong.

Also, Monday morning, before I went to school, I noticed he was swimming on his side near the surface, and couldn't turn the right way and couldn't swim downwards. He did eat the food though. But by the time I was home from school, he was fine again, and was hungary again!!

Could the 2 things be connected?
What could be wrong?
Can I do anything to help?

Thanks for your help before hand,

Gwenz

That usually is a sign of chemical poisoning.

This is the way Marty was acting with the overdose of Melafix. There is something in the tank that is poisoning him or affecting him. Could you get the water parameters and perhaps if your master test kit has a test for chlorine could you test for that too. Sometimes there is more in the water than the dechlor takes care of. In fact you may want to run a whole spectrum of tests from your kit. (pH, nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, iron, CO2, chlorine) I do not know if you have a local water department but you can also call and request a copy of the breakdown of water chemistry if it is like it is here. That way if there is something weird that they are adding or has gotten in there you will know. Also is there anything that you add to the water other than dechlor? plant fertilizer or anything? If so he may not be alble to handle it and you may have to do a massive water change or remove him from the tank and put him where he is in water with dechlor in it and nothing else. That is what I finally had to do with Marty. I had to even stop using Amquel+ on him and go strictly with StressCoat.

One other thing, are you careful how much dechlor you add to the water? They can also overdose on it. I keep a set of spoons to measure with that are just for the fish and one spoon is just for dechlor. I really am not saying any of these things are the problem but they sound so familiar and until you check, I would remove him to a container or place where he is in water with just dechlor and water nothing else.

Does he have an oxygen stone running? They can sometimes do this when they are a little short on oxygen too.

These are suggestions of things to try. I do hope something helps. Let us know how things are going.

Thanks for the tips. I haven't got much time to do the test right now but might get some done tomorrow. I only have Ammonia, NitrAte, NitrIte and PH tests though.

The lid on my decloronator is a mesuring cup and I mesure it out every time in there so I don't think I'm overdosing.

The only other thing I've added to the tank is Tetra Aqua Easy Balance. I've added to the other tank too and nothing is wrong there. It is meant to help reduce frequent water changes. I only used it because I have so much work to do for school at the moment I haven't got much time to do many water changes, so I used a little of it. I've used it before and it has had some good results. It's hard to think it could be harming him. What do you think?

I don't have anywhere to move him to at the moment as my Q tank isn't set up yet. :-\

Also, there isn't an airstone in the tank. I'd like to put one in there but I have nowhere to put it or the pump + I've run out of electicity sockets so can't plug anything else in!!

I don't know what I could do. :-\ Like I said he has been doing it since I've had him the same time as the others so can't be all something I've done. What do you think?

Thanks

don't worry, I'm hoping just doing loads of water changes will help.
