What’s Wrong With My Betta’s Eyes?

Nightshadethebetta

I noticed my betta’s eyes have not been looking good. It looks as if there is this white spot/slash on both eyes, and it comes outwards a bit. I tried my best to get a picture! His eyes do look a little larger than usual. I’ve also attached a pic of my most recent parameters. Please help!

Well need to have others looking but in the mean time, do these white things move at all? Or stationary and fixed? Is he eating/acting ok? Anything at all changed in the past few days/weeks?
Discus-Tang scarface CanadianFishFan if y’all are still around could you look at this little one for me? Please?

First of shook that the Queen of FishLore called on me.
Anyway how old is he? Last time you did water change? Is his spine curved like that all the time? His fins also look clamped. Is the thing on his eye or in it?

How old is the fish? They very often develop cataracts when they age.

I’m not entirely sure how old he is. I’ve had him for about 4 months now. He still eats, but not as much as he used to. I just did a water change yesterday and cleaned the gravel. His spine will only curve like that when he goes up for air sometimes. I want to say it’s on his eye, but it’s hard to tell. It started off as one eye, but now both have it. His fins have been clamped for a while. I’ve tried simulating him, I’ve cleaned his tank, they seem almost stuck like that. I find him floating near the surface or laying at the bottom almost everyday and then I’ll come interact with him, and he acts normal and swims just fine! He is still interested In food, but won’t eat every last bit like he used to

His fins are stuck like that because he has fin melt. Can we see a picture of the tank? He could've injured his eyes on something in the tank.

Have you tried switching his food up? Feed him a couple frozen blood worms a couple times a week. You could also do a few extra (small) water changes in between the normal weekly water changes.

A good diet and fresh water will cure/prevent a lot of problems.(Some things are out of our control but a variety in a fishes diet and clean water will at least make there time with us a good one and give them the best chance at a longer survival)

If you can afford it buy omega one brand. They have better ingredients compared to a lot of the other cheaper name brands.

Queen of salt

Thank you.

Speaking of salt, are you more comfortable giving salt baths or adding salt to the aquarium? Methylene blue baths could help as well. If you’re comfortable doing the bath, you could dissolve aquarium salt in dechlorinated water and mix in the mblue so you’re getting the benefits of both at the same time.

the rocks at the bottom of the tank seems sharp and could damage the fish's eyes.

If the betta fish is rubbing himself on the gravel then that's a possible indicator for... Velvet? Water lice? Can not remember but maybe someone else can chime in.

OP hasn’t said anything about him flashing. We’ll just have to wait for her to respond.

Yeah mine gets randomly, Bug Bites Tropical, HikarI Betta Bio-Gold pellets, TetraMin flakes with freeze dried bloodworm added and crumbled up. Omega One Tropical flakes, frozen bloodworms, and however much of the shrimp pellets and Pleco wafer as he manages to steal from the snails. He's a little spoiled.

The Omega One ingredients list can be misleading. They list whole fish and shrimp but when the food is made, those things are dried and lose much of their weight. I read one review that said it was even possible that in the end result, the wheat would maybe outweigh the other things. They are not as much better as they are made out to be. The same reviewer had positive things to say about TetraMin. Some Tetra foods are not that great but the TetraMin flakes are pretty good. They have a good mix of animal and vegetable proteins. It was a revolutionary food when it first came out 60 or so years ago and still holds up well.

the rocks, not the gravel but the brown rocks on top of the gravel in the bottom left area of the tank. I was meaning that the betta was getting scraped on the rocks in the bottom of the tank a little to the left, but still on top of the gravel.

That's not rocks, it's indian almond leaves and when they sink, they get very soft because they absorbed water. I think he could've injured himself on the intake if you didn't have any protective cover over it.

oh sorry, I am using a small laptop with a small screen which makes it a little hard to tell if it is slate rock or leaf litter. Oops, thank for clarifying that for me.

Hey, all! So sorry I’m late on responding. He’s still the same, I’ve never seen him rub himself against the gravel or anything else in the tank. I know he likes to kinda search around the gravel, where he puts his face very close to it, so he could have injured himself. He’s still eating, but he basically just sits near the surface in one spot for hours. I’ve cleaned his tank a few days ago, and I plan to clean it again soon. He seems very lethargic, but I hope he gets better!

there is such a thing sold at most local petsmart stores in the world called betta leaf hammock. literally a fake leaf with a suction cup on it that attaches to the side of the tank near the top of the tank. bettas love leaves to sleep on at night and you should get one. your betta will love it and it may make him feel safer. He will more likely to stay off the gravel when he sleeps and rest and sleep on this leaf hammock. what ever is the cause of the white point it will more likely be from the bottom of the tank than the surface of the water.

His eyes look slightly better, but his tummy has gotten larger. He has no problems swimming and I feed him once every other day. I thought maybe he was bloated at first, but that doesn’t seem to be it cause it’s still the same

Tell me. Is it more on one side or both equally? Will he eat peas? If he will you could feed them everyday. He just sounds so not happy.

It seems to be both sides equally. I haven’t tried feeding him peas yet, but that will be my next thing to try! Poor little guy
