What’s The Best Position For A Heater And Filter In A 20 Gallon Long?

Hey guys! Long time lurker but I’m happy to finally post. You guys have steered me really well in this hobby, but I do have one question that I didn’t seem to find an answer for when searching FL (or maybe I just suck at searching)

I plan to get this tank next week at Petco (All Hail the Dollar per Gallon Sale!)

About 2 weeks ago I got a Marineland 150 hob and today I just ordered an Aqueon Pro 150 (Snagged it for 20 dollars thanks to Prime Day)

Now, because the 20 gallon long is stretched out, I was wondering where I should put everything. Should I put the heater horizontally in the middle of the back panel or vertically next to the filter intake? And where should the filter go? In the middle of the tank or in a corner? I just want to make sure the water will circulate well and that the temp is constant throughout the tank.

I put the heaters opposite my filter because, in theory, the area with less flow will heat up faster, and the current from the filter will help circulate it. That way the tank is evenly heated and the heater doesn't have to kick on as much.

That's most of my tanks. In the angelfish tank at work I have 2 heaters to keep it at a consistent 82 degrees!

 

I have mine horizontal under the waterfall and low enough I don't even unplug it during water changes and it has plenty of flow. The filter you may have to try a few different spots to see what works best for your fish and decor.

 

I put my HOB on the left side in the corner so it circulates the water a bit better. The heater is vertical right next to it so it sucks in the heat and pushes it around. I also have my CO2 and thermometer on that side, so everything else is clear of equipment. Also helps in hiding the wires.
