What was the cause of death?

this happened a few months ago I just never posted about it but still to this day I’m curious why and what happened so first off my water parameters were really good and the temp was about 78 anyways I got this baby bn pleco from petco about an inch or less long, he was eating and swimming fine well a few days after I got it he was motionless on his back so I poked him and he started to breathe so I tried to upright him and encourage him to swim but he was like paralyzed he died over night anyone else have similar experiences?

 

You'll probably never really determine the cause of death.
The Pleco was probably suffering from an ailment contracted during shipping or while residing in the vendor's tank.

Usually, if a fish dies within a day or two of being purchased, it is either stress or a transit injury. There are ways to reduce stress to give them a better chance (be gentle with the bag, keep it dark, acclimate well, dim the lighting for a day or two after you get new fish, use almond leaves, etc), but you will inevitably lose a few new fish at some point.

No it’s only him in the tank for now (a smaller goldfish is in quarantine)
Oh and there’s a nerite snail but I seriously doubt he’s doing anything to buttercup lol
