I recently bought this angelfish for my 75 gallon planted aquarium. It would be helpful to know what kind it is and if possible some input on what gender you guys think it could be?(I know it is impossible to be 100% sure without them breeding) It is only 2 inches long and about 3 inches tall.

I really would like to breed angelfish but don't want to overstock my aquarium. If you guys can identify this one's gender would it be better to stick with just this one angelfish, try to buy the opposite gender in an attempt to have them pair up, or buy three or more other angelfish the same size as this one and hope two pair up and rehome the others? They all would be in the 75 gallon aquarium with my other fish.

Thanks

It's some sort of marble angel, looks like it's standard fin. You should try to get Rogue's attention- he's good at determining the gender of angels.

Typically, breeders put at least 6 juvenile angels together, and take the rehome the others when they get a pair. If your LFS will take them back, I'd get 6. If they're all about the same size as the one you have, your tank won't be overstocked.

I'm no expert with angels but I have read that male angels have a bump on the top of their heads. It looks like a female to me but like I said I'm no expert so I could be wrong. Rouge or catsma could help you with angels more then I can. Good luck finding one to pair with that one.

Well, it's so young that it hasn't had the chance to develop that yet. Once it's become mature, you'll be able to tell by it's forehead, although that's not a perfect method.

When this young it is almost impossible to sex; but I'd say male. You have a standard marble.

If you intend to breed you should pick up a few and let them pair off as nippy suggested.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the help. I will see if my LFS will take them back later if I get a pair and if they will I will get 5 more angels. Thanks again

EDIT: Would I be able to add the 5 new angels to my tank at the same time or spread it out so the good bacteria have time to adjust to the larger bioload.

Your tank's been set up for 2 months, so it's probably pretty stable. They'll be so small that I think you can put them all in at the same time. I'm mostly worried that the might be sick, and infect your other fish. Let's hope your LFS is a good one.

Okay thanks
Yeah my LFS is really good. All there fish are in great condition. Now I just have to call and see if they would take/buy the other angelfish from me after I get a pair.
