welcome to fishlore how big of a tank do you have? a common pleco will need at least a 55 gallon tank.
I have a 29 gallon tank. But don't fret my local pet store takes adult plecos if they get to big for your tank and gives you a young one or two!!!Oh and I checked out everything for a while now. got everything I could find.

You should change 20-25% of the water at least once every week or two, depending on your chemistry readings (more often if nitrates are high). As for cleaning the filter, what kind do you have?

Just squeeze the sponge out in used tank water about every other week or so.

Taking water out and disturbing the filter probably stirred up some of the debris in the tank. Give it 24 hours and it should settle down.
You may want to consider getting a better filter at some point, like a hang-on-back or cannister to provide some better (and faster) filtration.
