What To Add After Losing Fish?

  • #1
Hey guys, this is the result of losing some fish over the years:

1 glofish tetra
2 bleeding heart tetra
3 danios
4 Cory catfish

The tetras definitely don't school or anything at this number but no local store sells bleeding hearts anymore. What should I add the my 29gal to partner with what I have?
I'm most worried about the bleeding hearts because the two females nip at each other yet are always close together. I think I need some other fish to ease the tension. I'm also looking to add live plants. Which should I add first?

Thanks,
Michael

Sorry for your losses.
Is buying online an option for you? Right now you have 4 groups of schooling/shoaling fish so if it were me, I'd pick up more of the same cories to flesh out that shoal. And then I'd pick two of the three groups you have left and up their numbers. My suggestion would be to up the school of danios and bleeding heart tetras and rehome the lone glofish. The plants can be added whenever so I would address the fish first, especially if you're seeing tension.

Yes, you can always buy online.

So:

8x bleeding heart tetra
8x danios
6 cories.

May I ask what type of danios and cories?

The one day shipping is too expensive for me. I guess I can't use other tetras to fill in the gap?

If that's the case, I'll rehome the bleeding hearts.

Is there a special forum on here for that? How should I do it? Craigslist maybe?

Buy, Sell, Trade, Free

Up top is the link, but I've heard you need to have at least 50 posts to post there. If that's the case, then keep on posting; or go on Craigslist, ebay, or aquabid and sell it there

Here are the cories:

The tetras aren't too energetic, will others actually take them?

Not sure what the cory pic's ID is maybe chromedome52 can help.

The bleeding hearts will become more energetic if kept in a school of 6+, I can say for 99%

I bought the cories from petsmart and pretty sure they only have one kind which is why I didn't even know there were different ones. I'll post on Craigslist now and see how it works out. Thank you.

Do you know the ID for the danio?

Another mess up for me. Two are long finned black zebras, the other is a long finned golden zebra. Is this what you meant by ID?

I will definitely increase their numbers. What do you suggest? The cories and danios seem fine except no school. Add 5 more danios (both colors or...) and a few for cories?

6x glofish tetras
12x danios (6 of each type of danio you have)
8x cories (same species)

Maybe you can try the stock above?

Ok I will do my best... I feel too amateurish for saying this, but I never got enough of one for schooling because I wanted more variety to look nice though I don't have enough room. Will I still have room for others in my 29gal after this? Maybe something small like neon tetras? Or bigger? Don't remember if I mentioned but I have two sunset Mickey Mouse mollies.

Most LFS can order for you if you have access to one...not a big box store like petco but privately owned ones. Then they'll let you know once the fish arrive and then you buy them and take them home. Tetras may school with other tetras but will only do so out of necessity; its not a natural behavior.

I just did a quick search and I never expected to find other fish dedicated stores. Man I'm an idiot. Will definitely look into those.

The Cory appears to be a Peppered Cory, C. paleatus, though I'm sure Coradee or DoubleDutch can correct that if I'm mistaken.

Those Bleeding Hearts are in terrible condition, the fins are shredded. I would suspect the Glofish Tetra, as I don't believe the Danios would do that, and I'm sure the Cories won't. You need to get them into an isolation tank to heal up.

Oh they are doing that to each other. Whenever I feed them, they'd sit there and randomly attach each other. The glofish is the calmest fish I have in the tank.

If that's true, then I'd separate them. I find it hard to imagine that two females of that species would be that vicious with one another, but you are actually watching it happen! Goes to show, you're never too old to hear about something unusual and different.

So, after you rehome the bleeding hearts, I'd do this:

6x glofish tetras
12x danios (6 of each species you have)
6x peppered cories
2x sunset mickey mouse mollies

I don't think you have anymore room for more fish.

The Danios are only one species, I'd get 8, mix n' match color varieties if you like; they don't care.

Right now I have the tetras posted but I also called a few stores to see if they have them. Only one said they might and wanted me to call back next Thursday. Anything I can do now except wait? Should I go ahead and add the others?
If they are available somewhere, should I add 4 more?

Sorry, about the bleeding heart. I'm still looking if someone has them. If I do find them, is it ok if I add 4 more? Because I have to wait for them to sell either way. I think it'd be best if I can just find them for sale somewhere to quickly alleviate their tensions.

Then, I'll remove the glofish if you add more bleeding hearts.

This cory is bronze Cory

wikI link Bronze corydoras - Wikipedia

I got 8 of them

It is indeed peppered. It's my fault for the bad photo. The scales reflected the yellow light I had on so the whole fish looks that tone.
