What Size Filter For A 20 Gallon?

If I were to use an aquaclear power filter for munch 20 gallon tall should I use the 20 or the 30? I know people say it’s better to go up a size but is it necessary? Also if anyone had experience with this filter I’d like to know how noisy it would be. Thanks again.

 

I would get a filter that is rated for a 30 gallon tank for your 20g.

There are members who have experienced having filters that are equal or less for their tanks and having bacteria blooms happening.

They talk about why their tank is white but the parameters are great but at the end it’s always the filter not being enough.

More filtering is not a bad thing. For me as a rule I double up on the filtering for a specific tank:

20gal tank= 40gal filter
40gal tank= 80gal filter

and like so.

I have a 20 long. Started with the HOB Aquaclears, but decided to go with a canister. Got a Fluval 106, made for tanks up to 25 gal., has two baskets in it for media, but decided I wanted three baskets for media, so I got a Fluval 206, rated for up to 45 gal.tank. It doesn't hurt to use a bigger filter, as long as your fish look comfortable in the current. I've always preferred canisters as they are more efficient, easy to service, and are more reliable. Some may not agree with being easy to service, but in the long run, it's worth it in performance.
