I have swords in some seachem sand but if you use liquid ferts they should do fine. I don't use any tabs on most of my plants just liquid with no problems. but if you want to I would cut a seachem tab into 1/4 and make sure I put it right under the roots. if its right under the roots and the cichilds can't dig the roots up then they shouldnt be able to dig the tab up.

I would try to place the root tab under the plant roots. Then, your fish would have to dig up the entire plant to get to the tabs.
As you already know swords will not do well without an enriched substrate.
Good luck!

I have oscomote balls everywhere too. LOL.
Of course the solution is move their homes away from planted areas. For now.
