My Noel loves his Amazon Sword plant (Echinodorus amazonicus) and the Madagascar Lace Plant (Aponogeton madagascariensis) but those are both Big Plants. Some of the plants for the front of the aquarium are the Anubias Nana Petite (tiny) or Anubias Nana (medium sized) or Anubias Coffeeola, Java Fern (Microsoriium pteropus), Lace Fern, some like Java Moss (Vesicularia dubyana) - I think it is a mess.

on the same token of what do they like and hate how big do these plants get and if they get really large are they easy to trim back?

They can all be trimmed to size that is wanted some.  The Madagascar Lace Plant is the largest at 20" if you keep all the leaves.  I pull off the longer leaves and they send out smaller leaves that make the plant the right size for my tank.  The Amazon Sword is about 10 inches tall in my tank and is enough to fill the back quarter of my tank floor.  (I have a Hex tank)  (about 6 inches across) The Anubias Nana and Coffeeola are about 2 inches tall and 3 inches wide but grow by spreading so can become wider.  The Anubias Nana Petite is very tiny and will stay that way.  (1 inch tall at the most and about an inch across)  The Java Fern and Lace Fern are both about 6 inches tall and 3 inches across but they also grow by spreading and will get wider as they add on more leaves.  The Java Moss is sold by the cup I believe and while the moss itself is very small, by the time you get a whole ball of it it can be as big as the piece of it that you buy.  It does not grow fast, but it does spread about the tank if it is not tied down somehow. Strands of it just go everywhere.  It is beautiful but I just didn't like chasing it down all over when my Bettas fins drug it all over the place.

I hope this has helped.  For further information about any of these plants, check the site at .

How does one know what a fish likes and doesn't like? How does it indicate that it prefers one type of plant over another? Inquiring minds want to know!

well I know with the plastic plants if they are not where InarI likes them he will start pulling on them until they come up and then makes me stick them back down

Skylar lays on it all day. So if he's like it, why would he lay on it all day?? Just doesn't make sense.

LOL ;D I am basing my thoughts on the fact that Noel is constantly laying on the leaves of the plant and peering around like he is on a throne of some kind. He gets up and moves and swims and goes right back to his "throne" He sleeps on that leaf and chases any of the others away quickly. It is like his own private perch. I had a plant like this die and got a different kind and he never warmed up to it so I put the Lace Plant back and he went right to it. If that isn't love I guess I don't know what to call it. They get so attached to some things. Misty has moved more and has had more changes than the rest of them and is upset all the time as here "toys" keep getting left behind. I finally made up my mind that she gets to keep her "toys" this time no matter what! Since she had quit being a nipper and I thought it might be okay to take Lady Liberty out of the tank to perhaps give them some more room and she wouldn't eat for 2 days so Lady Liberty is now a Permanent Part of her tank. (and now all is well) They do have their little ways of letting me know when they like something and when they do not. I guess it is easier the more you get to know each of their personalities.

I posted new pictures of my tanks in this section earlier and most of the plants I talked about here are in one or the other of my tanks if you want to see what they look like.

Yes thanks Rose - I think I saw that one yesterday. My lfs doesn't sell plants (well, they do but they are all kind of dead and brown), so I've been trying to look for something on the internet that will ship to UK. Yesterday I looked for hours but I couldn't find anything. I found 1 and asked about it in the General Discussions bit and people said it was rubbish. Do you know of any sites that sll plants to the UK?

Thanks

I found this site. Anyone know if they are any good?

I was searching different plants that I like and heard that some people have here, and they have: Amazon Swords (potted)  £1.99
Java Fern (on a Rock) £3.99
Java Moss (in a Cup) £1.99
and this plant that looked kind of cool called Gymnocoronis Spilanthaides (sp?) (potted) £1.99

Anyone heard of this? Does this look like a good site to you? At the start they explain how they would ship the plants to you and it sounds quite good to me. what do you think?

Thanks

aquarium plants ships internationally and they are pretty much the only place I buy plants from other than occasionally at my LFS. They have a very good selection and the plants always arrive in good shape. Check their Shipping Info page for information about international shipping.

Thanks for that. I would try that but my mum finds it a little annoying sometimes trying to convert $ into £. So it's easer to try and get some from a UK site. What do you think of the one in the post below?

Thanks

It looks great to me and I found a plant I wish I had. The only thing is be careful of the Potted plants. I always have better luck with the bare root variety and get some plant anchors for them so they don't float. The wrap around lead strips are the best I have found for me but use the ones you see that are the best for you. The other thing is the prices are for 5 plants so if you know someone else who has an aquarium or if you want to use them in more than one tank, just get a couple of kinds and use the groupings since your tanks are small. Or look for pygmy plants or those with petite in the name. The plants listed as background plants will probably be too big for your tank. You need to use those midground plants for background plantings and foreground plants to use in the midground and foreground depending on the height.

Otherwise the prices are right and much cheaper than having them shipped from the States.

Thanks, I need some new plants for my 15gallon. I only have 2 Vellisneria (sp?) spirals in there and want to put some more some if I had groups of 5 plants I could spread some to different tanks.

I was searching different plants that I like and heard that some people have here, and they have: Amazon Swords (potted) £1.99

Out of the plants I listed before, which do you think I should get if they are not potted and I have to have them in groups of 5?

Thanks again

The Java Fern would be great. Some people love the Java Moss, but I don't like it much unless you tie it down to things. Bettas have long enough fins that it gets caught in the fins and they drag it all over the tank because they love to lay around in it all the time. It took me months to get all of the little wisps of it out of my tanks. I don't know anything about the other plant and all but if you like the looks of it you might try posting on the Plants section and see if there is anyone else who may know about it. Maybe off-ice would know and if he doesn't come on he has his own website that tells about all kinds of plants. It is a great site.
