What Parameters Do You Test Other Than The Basics?

Hey Everyone,

I am just wondering if anyone tests for elements other than the basics. Such as ammonia, nitrite, nitrates and PH? I did have a 40 gallon planted tank that I was dosing with Flourish, Flourish Excel, and Flourish Iron. We recently upgraded to a 130 gallon and were wondering if we keep using those chemicals and dosing is there anything else we should be testing for? I also have a 65 gallon saltwater tank so I am familiar with calcium testing, alk testing, and so on. I just didn't know if these were things that we test for in planted / freshwater tanks?

Welcome to fishlore! Congrats on the new tank. I can't help very much other than to say perhaps you can get a gh and kh kit. Might come in handy with the plants or if you plan to have shrimp... I dunno what else you could get on that line of thought...

Well thanks. I have a tester for KH so that shouldn't be an issue. Do you mind me asking what GH is ? Is that calcium and magnesium? If so I have individual testers for that but its more for the saltwater tank. Any suggestion what the average KH is ? 7-10?

Anyway thanks for the response that still helps. Just don't want to miss something I should be testing for is all.
