I'm thinking of snails, shrimp, bettas, guppys? of course not all together

I'd personally do a shrimp only tank, but that's because I want one :D

I think a single pea puffer could go in a heavily planted five, but I'm not positive.

one thing do pea puffers need schools?

I don't think so. I know you can do a school in a larger tank, but I don't think they need one.

A pea puffer in a 5 gallon would do great. Pea puffers need about 3-5 gallons per puffer and do best in specie only tanks.

1 pea puffer in the tank would do well, but they are a bit harder to feed than normal species.

I would go for a betta to save one from a nasty cup.

Any of the first 3 are fine, even together. Guppys need a 10g.

Here’s a good article on the subject of pea puffers:

I wouldn't do guppies in this tank size.
