It has 4 trays 1 course sponge, ceramic rings and 2 carbon trays, I wana ditch the carbon. But what should It be replaced with?

I use purigen instead of carbon and matrix instead of the ceramic rigs since in low flow rates they harbor more denitrifying bacteria. Or if you just don’t want chemical filtration anymore you can add more biological filtration.

Should I get anything for mechanical filtration?

I. The bottom try of my 406 I use bio foam and then fluval polishing pads on top of the biofoam for mechanical filtration. The top three are full of seachem matrix and the purigen rests on the very top.

I have a fluval FX4, while not the same the concept of their products have water coming from top to bottom. I have basically filter floss (AKA Poly fil) or you can use poly pads that you can find at craft stores or Walmart...I put a layer on top of that, course sponge and nothing but filtration after that.

I like the pondguru's vids, watched several before I bought my Eheim. It's why I don't use any carbon, it just takes up room that could be used for more BB.
