What kind of Algae Eater Should I get?

Hello All!

I have a 10 gal tank currently with 3 female guppies.

I am wanting to get some sort of an algae eater but not sure what to get.

Any Suggestions?

 

Otocinclus or snails or a true sae

 

Just get a small pleco

 

Maybe some amano shrimp or nerite snails for a tank that small.

Also read up on the nitrogen cycle. <------------

 

10g is to small for anything but shrimp or snails. ottos are usually form the wild and would require small more frequent water changes, and most still wouldnt recommend them for a 10g.

 

I'd definitely go with nerites. Ottos can be VERY touchy, and I believe every pleco gets a little to large for a 10 gallon. I'd get 3-4 nerites. Make sure you feed them, though. Pick up some algae wafers or some veggies that they like!

no the smallest species of pleco gets to 6" long and needs at minimum a 30 gallon tank.

get either Mystery or nerites snails, red cherry shrimp or dwarf sucker mouth catfish Otocinclus or a True Siamese algae eater (be very careful shops like petco and walmart and petsmart like to stock Chinese algae eaters and when young they resemble the oto or sae very closely.)


I have 4 oto I bought 6 the biggest thing is to keep the transit of them short and the acclimation of them slow drip acclimation is recommended but not required I bought 6 for my 10 gallon tank 2 died the other 4 are thriving and I think 2 are pregnant...


I also have Chinese algae eaters I got stuck with they do a nice job when young but they grow to 11" long and get aggressive and territorial. When older they don't eat algae they rather eat flake food and other foods that you feed them.

It should also be noted that the only algae eater that eats black beard algae is a true SAE but you likely don't have to worry about that yet.
