What's your favorite one? Also, do severum species have different temperament and requirements?

Thanks.

I like all of them!
Id say they do have different personalities. Many of the fish that we call sevs are different color variations, but not all. Whenever you breed for one thing (like color), there's a chance of accidentally making a second trait (like light sensitivity, aggression, etc. more prominent also)
imo gold seem calmer.
ok I'm gonna get off my lecturn.

I"ve kept three different species of "Severums", though my effort at keeping Rotkeil ended badly, and early. I have bred the mouthbrooding species, Heros liberifer, and currently have an undescribed species from the Rio Inirida that are making me crazy. I feed a large clump of Guppy grass to the group every couple of weeks, and they go crazy over it. It usually takes no more than two days to make it disappear. Regular food is Xtreme Cichlid MinI pellets, fed daily.

Personally, I found the Mouthbrooders most interesting, The color patterns are quite different from other Heros species, and the pair shares brooding duties.

Other than the one species being a mouthbrooder, I don't see a lot of difference in behavior or environmental requirements for any of the species and strains.

Thankssss! May I ask why you had diffifulties keeping them? Aren't they easy to keep?

It's a long story involving a freezing 5 hour trip back from Ohio with no heat in the van, and fungus all over them when I got them into a warm tank. As I said, ended quickly and badly. IME, the various Heros species and strains are usually all pretty hardy.

I'm currently keeping a juvenile gold and rotkiel...at least it was sold to me as a rotkiel...we'll see if it turns out to be one. It has the typical "8 stripes" of a rotkiel but that could be from another strain or it being a hybrid. All I know is that it's not a standard green severum from what I've seen has 9.

Anyways...they are both pretty peaceful. And I have to say my favorite right now is the "rotkiel" but that's more because of individual personality. The gold is currently the king of the tank and can get a little pushy if one of the other cichlids gets in his face. But both seem to be pretty peaceful.
