Hello, I’m new to the forum and would appreciate your help.

A little over a year ago I bought a Betta for my fiancée as a surprise gift. She fell in love with the Betta, now named Ares. We’ve had no issues with him until a few days ago when my fiancée started noticing that he was acting weird. Ares used to flare up every time we’ll get close to his tank and was full of energy. At first he was slightly on his side (although that has seemed to stop), doesn’t flare up as much and he hides a lot. At first I thought it was dropsy but then I got a closer look at him and that’s when I saw that he had white specks on both his eyes and his scales looked a bit white by the belly. Could this be Ich? He is in a planted 2.5g aquarium. Will attach picture.

Water parameters:
Nitrates: 20
Nitrite: 0
Ammonia: 0
PH: 6.5
GH: 30
KH: 0
Water Temp: 78

In my experience ich doesn't usually just start exclusively on the eyes. To me he looks like he may have dropsy.

We’re you able to see the pictures I uploaded? I’m not sure why they’re not showing up on my side. Anyways, you might be right. Our LFS gave us some medicine to cure dropsy and other diseases. Let’s hope it works.

Images aren't working correctly on the desktop site right now, I looked at them on the app!

Hopefully more advice can be given, if I recall correctly once your fish really starts showing signs of dropsy its often too late to treat. I am hoping for the best for you tho!

Thank you for your replies! I hope so too. He’s slowly starting to come around.

I don’t see any raised scales. Am I missing something?

The pictures aren’t that great. But by his belly the scales look a tad bit white and are slightly raised. I'm guessing it’s early signs of dropsy. But luckily his characteristics are coming back so maybe he’s getting better with the medicine I was given.

If you catch dropsy early you can treat with Kanaplex and hope that it reverses the symptoms. If the dropsy is being caused by a bacterial infection then kanaplex will resolve the issue. However, normally dropsy is a sign of organ failure and there is little you can do.

That fish doesn't have dropsy. If it did you would clearly see the round body and scales sticking up no mistaking it.

That’s actually the medication I used. His scales used to pop out a tad bit, but after two treatments he’s back to his old self. Not sure what the problem was but I’m guessing it was some sort of bacterial infection like you mentioned.

Not sure what he had, but Kanaplex did the job. He’s back to flaring up and being energetic.

That is actually only if you don't catch it early. Once you see what you're describing generally there is no coming back from it. Dropsy has other, less obvious, signs as well.

I just wanted to say that I have heard Dropsy can and will come back. Just take care to watch him closely for awhile and make sure it does not try to come back. I'm glad the problem was resolved!!

Thank you! We actually dosed him with medication again yesterday (every two days). We’re keeping an eye on him and doing everything we can to prevent it from coming back.
