What is wrong with my plants!?!?

So I'm trying live plants for the first time. I have a regular led light that came with my Marineland tank. The guy at my lfs assured me that java fern and hornwort would grow in almost any conditions and it should be fine.
The plants were fine for about 3 week then out of no where they turned white over night. The only thing I did differently is that I got a python water changer so I added water conditioner directly to the tank instead of mixing it in buckets like I usually do. Then the next morning after my water change all my plant are turning white.
What is this and how can I fix it?

Hello,

I don't know much about Java Fern because I never tried growing them, but I have tons of Hornwort and they're doing okay in my tank with regular led. I even always have to trim them every 2 weeks or a month.

If your Hornworts are long enough, you can just trim the dead part and let alive parts to grow. And also try to float some of them and tie to something like rocks, etc (they can grow while floating).

Try to add some fertiliser to your substrate, usually turning white means lack of nutrients, and they need sometime to adjust themselves in the new tank condition.

I hope some experts here could help you.

Good luck.

PS:

You uploaded those photos while I was writing my post above.

From seeing the picture, I'm not sure if they're really turning white or some "white stuff" staying on your hornworts. Can those white stuff be rinsed?

Sorry for double post.

I have tried rinsing them however I had no luck removing the white stuff. The plants are in a 60 gallon with 2 kuhlI loaches, 2 peppered corys, 1 bristlenose pleco baby and 1 platy fry. I recently had a bad case of ich come in with some tetras I bought and the I lost most of my fish. The ich has been gone now for about a week but I'm scared to add new fish. Could they be missing nutrients because the stocking is so low? Should I add new fish? Could it have been the super ick cure the has done this?

You shouldn't ever dose your display tank for this reason, being way more expensive as another reason. Some meds can destroy different types of plants.

I guess it kinda looks like some sort of fungus. I had this at first in my filterless tank but it went away after about 4 months. Mine kinda looked different though. The leaves look okay on your java fern. I'd throw out the brown parts of the hornwort.

I'm so sorry to hear that.

You should have quarantined the sick fish inside other tank (quarantine tank / hospital tank) before pouring some medicine. Some plants (mostly?) can't stand fish medicine and high amount of aquarium salt.

I'm not sure what those white stuff are, I've had once my hornworts turning white, but they weren't so dotty-white like yours.

And the picture you've shown, your hornworts have turned to be brownish, too. They are dying.

Better not to add new fish into your tank, we're still not sure yet whether the Ich (both adult and cyst) is still there.

From my understanding once the ich is seen on any fish you have to treat the entire tank or remove all fish and treat separately and leave the main tank empty for 2 weeks. That's why I treated the whole tank.

I know now that I should never add new fish with qt first. I went out and got a qt now and am using media from my betta tank to speed up the cycling process so I can start qt new fish once my 60 gallon is safe for new fish. I'm so mad at myself for not doing this sooner but you live and you learn.

It happens, no big deal. Just don't throw away plants unless they're clearly dying. And newly added plants always have a bit of die off, even if they were grown in water. Just make sure any chemicals added to the tank are plant safe. And never add salt to an aquarium with plants, they don't like it very much. Good luck.

The bottle said it was plant and filter safe. I only did half dose because of my scaless fish. And I don't add salt for that same reason. How do I get rid of the white stuff?
