I hear lots of people recommend prime to new people on here but I have never heard someone recommend aqua safe. Why?
What is the difference?

Prime detoxifies anmonia, nitrite, and nitrate in a way that can still be used by nitrifying bacteria.

Here's another thread where this was discussed. I think you'll find it helpful

Prime is the way to go especially for those of us that have large tanks.

Aqua Safe is a good water conditioner designed to remove/neutralize chlorine and some of the heavy metals found in a lot of our tap water. Prime does basically the same thing but it takes it one step further and also binds low levels of ammonia, nitrites and nitrates.

Once a tank is cycled either product will be fine but while cycling with fish in the tank Prime is recommended because it can protect the fish from the spikes that happen while cycling.

It isn't necessary if one was doing a fishless cycle so either product will work fine when the tank is first set up to remove the chlorine. Chlorine is detrimental to the bacteria we are trying to grow so needs to be removed.

55 is my small tank right now, I also have a 5' 100 gallon and working on a deal to get into either a 125 or a 180 gallon tank. The 180 comes with a 75 gallon sump.

Ok. Thanks. My two tanks have been cycled for ages and I usually use aqua safe. I have this stuff that kickstarts the cycle and have been fine without prime. I don't know how my fish have survived in my tank. It went from ok to almost lethal in one day. If I hadn't noticed the cloudiness, my fish would have been dead. I felt so proud after that and no one died, not even zak.

It's taken a lot of years and searching to find what I have wanted for a reasonable price.
