What is the coolest thing any of your bettas do?

Andre does such an outstanding job of leaping out of the water and getting food from the end of my finger. He carefully gauges the distance, gets close to the water, and leaps up for it. Sometimes he gets my finger, but a lot of time he gets the food PEFECTLY! It's so cool how he does it. Spazz on the other hand, well, she leaps violently at the food and usually doesn't get it. She attacks the finger and hopes for the best

What are the tricks your bettas do?

HAHA Spazz sounds like my Spot!! He leaps misses and swims with the pellet on his head saying 'duh' ! He does a mean Homer at times!!

Flame is just Flame, aka Flambo, a moody sod! He NEVER misses the pellet and if he does he will swim by as if to say 'it was YOUR fault baffoon!!!'

Honey always ate off my finger IF she liked the food or RIPPED it out of the tweezers. However her best bit for me was when she swam into my hand last Saturday and lay there 20 mins before she died. I was with her when she did. I have 3 pics of my girl on my fingers, she left me a great memory and gift even though she was poorly. My little minx!!

My Bettas jump for food too. My female Cas usually gets it while my male Fuego always misses. That's about all they do, aside from flaring at each other all day. They're such silly little guys.

Spot seems have realised he can flare overthe last 6 weeks, he does a half flare and then goes' oh it was you all along!!' Bless him, if his eyes weren't bad he'd be a numpty!! (aka muppet)

Angel loves to pout at me after I clean her tank, she swims back & forth to get my attention when she wants it and she'll make little biting motions with her mouth when it's getting near a meal time.

My little Ralphie jumps out of the little opening in the canopy just to get some food. The hole is about 1"x2" and Ralph is able to get through and get the food before he even sees the food. He sees my hand reach for the food and he gets all excited and before long, he is on the floor and I need to pick him up and put him back in the tank.

My new Betta flares out HUGE when he ses me grab the HikarI package. So excited. I haven't had a Betta in years. I also like the way he chews his food. You can see his little head chomping up and down on what ever I've fed him. If he weren't so small I know you'd hear little crunches.

Am I the only one who finds this not cute?

No Pamd, it disturbs me!! Not a nice in my mind!!

Tom seeing your betta excited is cute but to allow him to jump out and hit the floor is NOT GOOD for him!! Imagine what you falling out of a window of a tall building would do to your body!!????? I would suggest you should be more careful at feed times!! That way you will get to enjoy Ralphie for a lot longer in life.

it is true that the impact from a fall to the floor causes more damage than the time out of the tank, especially in Bettas. That's how we lost Anakin on the trip here, somehow he jumped out and although he got put back in, the internal damage killed him by morning.

Angel has added a new weapon to her pouting arsenal and freaked us out when she learned it. She now hides in the bottom of her rainbow cave, in just the right spot so that I can't see her unless I go to the exact opposite side of her hex tank. The first time she did it, we both were frantically searching for her. Once we found her, she just swam out like "haha, made you look".

And Mickey loves to poke his head out of his cave, then when he sees us watching, he'll swim all the way out & up to the glass.. flare, and swim away all proud of himself.

I love how they come when you call them.

I love their 'wagging tail' behaviour when they're happy.

I love that they're not scared of anything I do around them, and they're just calmly checking out what I am doing, even if it's quite an upheaval of their tank.

I love that one of them 'cuddles' me. I cup my hand in the water, and she'll swim in the cusp of my hand, then back out and back in the other end. She'll do that endlessly. It's really cute.

I love how they jump for food to get a worm I've attached to a stick. They'll really jump impressively high! I really love that once they've got a hold of the stick, they won't let it go.

One of them will chase a stick that I put in the water, and she'll pretend she's not looking and pounce. When I play wiht her, it reminds me of a cat playing.

Oh goodness, something else I forgot to add....

Andre is a SPOILED BRAT!!!!!! He no longer eats food unless it is soaked in garlic guard!!! If it's not soaked in garlic guard, he spits it right out

Also, I really like to watch Spazz swim around and do her thing...but if I get anywhere close to her tank, she swims right up to me (probably hoping for food). If I move my face to another side of her tank, she swims to that side.

This is a fun thread, really enjoy hearing what some of your bettas funny little quirks and talents are

My little Teena makes me laugh. Whenever I put something new in her tank, she flies over to it, then puts on the brakes so fast with her little ventral fins you can almost hear a screech. Then she sits there staring as though saying "Where the heck did THIS come from??" So cute.

I don't find fish landing on the floor funny either. I would panic.

That is so sweet how she trusts you!!

Ah yes, that's something I didn't think of, in the morning it's really dark when I get up and I don't want to startle them when I turn the lights on, so I call their names and they both immediately come to the front top of the tank like "hey I'm up, you can feed me now!!" It's pretty cute.

I LOVE it when Flame gets grumpy if an object is too near his tank, for example as he is next to the pc a calculator was nearby, I couldn't understand why he was zooming and flaring. When picked up the cal to use he stopped and was SOOO calm. When I placed it back he started again!! I guess he had been screaming 'will you move that THING now!!'
He can be a real grump and then a kitten when he gets HIS way!! He's like a grumpy old man!!!

I actually had a betta named Dante that would play fetch with me . . . . I'd take a little plastic ball that floated, and toss it into the tank, he would grab it/push it to a certain spot, and pop it back out of the water at me.

Sooooooo cute, Barbrella! I see exactly what you mean.

Yeah, I think that's what I love the most about these fish: how they trust us. It would really take a lot for them to panick I think.

I like the way they look for/at me. Topaz (the yellow girls) has big eyes and she is looking at the surface (for finger) and then just turn eyes to tank glass looking at me.
Gipsy that I raised since she was little and very sick is so used with my hand that she will let me hold her in my hand (with a little bit of water in it) ... she is not struggling or scared.
I think the girls are smarter than boys .... they flare mucho things too much. I mean ... bettas.

Yeah, I got that feeling too, about the girls being more interactive and smarter than the boys, but I've only had two boys, and one was when I was little and the other one was sick from day one, so I don't know. I certainly enjoy my girls' company, that's for sure!

Well, keep in mind I've only had a few Bettas, but the Betta I had the closest relationship with was by far a male. Although, the only female I've had is in a divided 10 with a male on the other side. I wonder if keeping a male and female together like that affects how they interact with humans. As far as intelligence......the females do seem to be at times a bit smarter.

I agree re females, Honey was a little star. Liked to sit in my hand too! The 2 boys are so different from her but adoreable too.

I hear what you are saying about their eyes, Spots eyes are huge and make me laugh!!

Especially the opaque's eyes, like our Angel & Teddy Bear have. Those seem to emphasize their eye movement the most. Teddy Bear has orange 'eyebrows' too, so he's the most expressive of our Bettas.

My Commodore sleeps all day in his little shipwreck, but the minute he sees me enter the room he shoots up as fast as he can to a certain corner as that corner is where he is always fed. If it's not feeding time he waits there for a while then just follows me around. Sometimes but rarely he just follows me instead of swimming to the corner as if he hasn't eaten before. He loves me

Dave? You know how you were saying that one of yours was miming a chewing movement when he was begging? One of ours has started to do that (the cambodian: Satang). Soooo cute.

She's really really really excited anytime we go anywhere near her. I was cruel the other day: I presented her with a hard spaghettI strand from outside of her tank, as I normally present her with various shapes and colours to stimulate her, but I didn't realise that it looked exactly like her feeding stick to her. She went in suuuuuch a frenzy. It was hilarious.

Since she's moved to the kitchen, she's become hugely excitable, like a total puppy. She's adorable at the mo. Much happier than in the tank she was in before.

Well my female Cas has taken to trying to trick me into feeding her extra. I feed them at around 6:30 in the morning after I get up so I'm pretty out of it. Sometimes I'll drop in her pellet and then grab a pellet for Fuego and not be paying as much attention, but when I lookeed up Cas wasn't chewing, just staring at me like, "where's the food?!" I thought maybe I had been hurrying too much and accidentally dropped her pellet on the floor instead of the tank. But somehow I didn't think so, so I watched her suspiciously for a few moments and finally she gave in and started chewing the pellet (which was in her mouth the whole time).

they are tricky - i've noticed that ours will sometimes let a pellet or 2 go by them. They see the pellets, but are hoping that we'll drop more. and sure enough, when we move to the next tank, they go after those "lost" pellets.

lol.. yea, they really know how to work us, don't they? I love to show them things too, especially colorful objects. It's funny how different their reactions can be. The kitchen sounds like a great spot for her - that's why I have 4 near the computer.

Frankly, I think even if she saw me prepare a betta fillet she'd be pleased for the flash of bright colours on display. She's a bit of a nitwit. Just show her moving shapes and the girl's happy.
