What is the best way to control the snail population in my tank?

I have always had planted tanks. So with my luck , knowing me I would get something a little extra with my plants. I got a new plant, and upon buying it I did a visual check and everything seemed to be in order. So I planted it. Well it's been a few weeks and I spotted a big pond snail, along with probably 20 super tiny baby snails. I don't really mind snails all that much but I don't want them overrunning my tank, which is a pretty likely scenario from past experience. What is the best way to control the snail population in my tank? I've heard about assasin snails, what are the pros and cons to them? Thanks in advance

Just don't overfeed

I have ramshorn and bladder snails - as FishFish221 said main thing is to avoid overfeeding. If you end up with more than you want an easy way to reduce the population is to leave a blanched piece of cucumber in the tank for a few hours and then remove it with the snails sitting on top.

I have a couple of assassin snails in my heavily planted 5 gallon which was infested before with mts, ramshorn & bladder snails. Based on my experience, even without overfeeding, ramshorn & bladders snails are the perfect combination for a population explosion. Ramshorns eat live plants, the leaves die and then eaten by the bladder snails. After a week of having assassin snails, they already made a huge dent on the pest snail population. One thing I noticed the first time I put the assassins, after a few minutes, most of the bladders snails went up in the tank just above the water line. It's as if they sensed their nemesis.
Pros:
They keep the population of the pest snails in check.
They're slow to breed so they will not overrun your tank
They're better looking.

Cons:
There's no way of telling their sexes.

Ok this was somewhat along the lines of what I've heard. I don't reallyover feed my tank so I'm not worried about that, I just have had my tank completely over run by these fellas before a couple years ago in a different tank and I Do Not want to repeat that. Thank you
