What is the best dechlorinator?

I have prime, and it’s ok but for someone like me with a cycled tank and no ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in tap water, I personally see no use for the added benefits. I only see the benefits of prime if they are doing a fish-in cycle or their tap contains chloramines, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.

I’ve been looking into all sorts of water conditioners to find the perfect one for me. Stress coat, Fritz guard, and Kordon NovAqua plus are good ones IMO. Out of the three I prefer NovAqua, as it adds electrolytes, slime coat, stabilizes pH, and prevents fish against stress and disease. It also says it’s nearly impossible to overdose.

So what conditioners does everyone use and recommend, and does anyone have experience with NovAqua?

They (water conditioners = de-chlorinators) all use sodium thiosulfate in roughly the same concentrations and preparations. At best you can make the distinction: "Normal concentration", "higher concentrated" and "with additives" (spoiler: the last is only marketing-relevant). The only thing that for sure changes is the name on the label.

So pick the best value package size and stick to it.

I use the API Stress coat and also add API Stress Zyme liberally with each water change. It has the good bacteria which help keep your aquarium crystal clear and I like it.

I've used a fair few brands over the years. I have been using fritz accr and like it. But yeah they are all pretty similar, and do at minimum remove chlorine and chloramines (ammonia, heavy metals etc detoxification im skeptical on). Though I believe some types of dechlorinators affect certain medications, so check when medicating.

Ok! I’ll be sure to thoroughly read through the description of every product. I think I am just gonna get Kordon NovAqua plus, I’ve had good experience from the original Kordon NovAqua and the plus is the same but added benefits. Thanks!

One of the reasons that I use Prime is because it is highly concentrated and works out less expensive in the long term than most other conditioners. The standard dose is 1 ml per 10 gallons. By contrast the standard dose of Kordon NovAqua Plus for aquariums is 5 ml per 10 gallons, so you need to take that into account.

API is the most concentrated that I've found so far, apart from buying the dechlorinating salts and making it yourself.

my favourite is continuum. its just under 1mL per 10gallons (5ml for 53 gallons) and not as expensive as api or prime (where i am at least). also detoxifies ammonia and everything like prime does and you can massively overdose with no issues.

I’m not really looking for a super concentrated dechlorinator. I usually add tap water to 1 gallon jugs that held spring water/distilled water, then dechlorinate. My tank is only 20 gallons and it’s easier for me to measure 10 ml that 2 ml. I don’t care much about price, I’m getting a 16 oz container of dechlorinator and Kordon fish protector as well.
