What is happening???

I added in a piece of driftwood into my tank which currently has no fish in it but the driftwood has started turning white in places and there seems to be a cobweb like structure on some of the branches. What is happening???

These are the cobwebs if you can see them, sorry about picture quality.

Probably just fungus. It's normal and will go away on its own eventually or you can let some shrimp have at it :)

Ok I thought the patches would be fungus but I wasn't sure about the cobwebs, thanks

    Just two more questions
1 is it harmful to fish?
2 if I clean it off will it grow back?

That is happening to mine as well. Unfortunately, my fish are also growing it...treating with Pimafix . My shrimp (4 ghosts, 3 Cherry, 6 Amano) won't touch it.

My driftwood that's in with my Betta is growing that and it hasn't spread or gotten on my Betta at all. I do not know what it is though. [IMG]

If it does spread on to fish ill make sure I've cleaned it and that its not growing back before I add any fish

You can take the wood out of the tank and boil it for an hour. That will kill most things dead and leach a goodly amount of tannins from it as well.

I've already boiled and my lfs wood is preboiled, I'll try scrubbing it and if it grows back I'll look into some other options

It tends to grow back when you clean it off, at least mine did the first time I used driftwood. Now I just let it do its thing.

How long does it take to die off by itself?

Maybe a week or two? My shrimp usually make short work of it but the one tank I have some in that doesn't have shrimp still has very little and it's been in there about a week.

Ok I'll leave it for a couple of weeks then
