20 Gallon Tank What is going on with my Gourami's eyes?

29 gal cycled aquarium with an AquaClear 50 power filter.
pH 7.0
Ammonia today had a spike for unknown reason of 4.0 (normally 0) did a 50% water change about 2hrs ago but haven't rechecked the Ammonia yet.
Nitrite 0 (was at 0.25 before water change)
Nitrate 5.0
Aquarium community of: 5 Mollies, 5 tetras, 3 Dwarf Gouramis, 2 Flower Shrimp, and 1 Mystery Snail.
I have no idea what it going on or what to do. I have 3 Dwarf Gouramis - 1 Flame, 1 Blue, and 1 Powder Blue. My Blue I've had for about 2 weeks and he's finally out and about and more active from hiding. My Flame and Powder Blue I got at the same time 3 days ago. They are mostly hiding but do come out into the open now and then or up to the surface for their air but yesterday I noticed my Flame had one completely white, milky colored eye and my husband assumed it was injured from the Tropical Fish store. Then today I noticed the other eye is now getting a small white dot on it.
All my other fish seem to be just fine. I have no idea what it is or what to do. I have Googled and searched for answers but nothing quite fits.
Please any ideas?

Since you just got new fish, I'd say the ammonia spike is likely due to that. How long has the tank been set up? Ammonia can cause cloudy eyes too, but it could be other things as well. I would say your first step is definitely to get your water quality figured out. Test frequently and big water changes to keep that ammonia and nitrites down until your bacteria can catch up. If he doesn't start turning around, I'd be considering treatment for bacterial and fungal infections next.

I've had it set up for a month. I just did a 50% change today but before today I haven't had any issues with my water quality. Now it's making my insane. Should I wait until tomorrow to check the Ammonia again?

Not sure on the official answer, but if it was my tank I'd probably be checking twice a day (before and after water change each time) and maybe more frequently if I started seeing signs of stress in anyone else.

Just an update. His eyes seem to be clearing up on their own. All I did was add live plants to my tank.

Nice! Hopefully between the new plants and a little time for your bacteria to catch up, your ammonia spike is taken care of!
