Just curious as to what everyone likes as a substrate in their planted aquariums.

I have fluorite now in a 60 gallon and it's been great for over a year. It's a real pain to rinse and even a year later I still get dust from it.

Has anyone used the fluval plant and shrimp substrate? It's expensive.... is it worth the money?

Do you guys use inert substrates and then fertilize with tabs?

I used to have flourite in my 20g, but I had the same problems with the dust. I ended up switching to normal sand and fertilizing with Seachem Flourish Excel. So far it's been working pretty well!

I use petsmart black sand. No frets co2 or root tabs. And my my plants are growing. In fact I got to collect some cuttings from them for my other tank.

CaribSea Eco Complete. It works better than normal gravel/aquarium sand IMHO. It’s all I use now, but it’s because it was the only thing available at the pet store at the time. So, I have nothing to compare to, aside from using normal aquarium sand/gravel.
