What Is A Good Product To Get Rid Of Blue Algae?

I’m having a serious problem trying to combat blue algae in my tank. It’s a new tank I’m cycling. I keep doing water changes and cleaning the tank body it keeps getting worse. No fish inside. I was wondering if there’s any product that gets rid of this algae?

do you have a bubbler/airstone?? oxygenated water really helps eliminate cyanobacteria. you might want to get something like a bubble bar to cover more surface area.

Live plants would help too, they battle the algae for nutrients. Is your tank right next to a window? If so maybe you should move it cause the sun could be growing the algae.

Cyano isn't algae. It is a bacteria. It thrives in low flow low oxygen water. You can starve it of light but it usually comes back. I was battling cyano for quite some time until I ran the tank with hydrogen peroxide and added 2 bubblers. Hasn't come back since. For the peroxide I did remove my fish because I increased the dosage of the fish safe recommendation.

Are you sure it's BGA/cyanobacteria? I'd be a little surprised to see it in a brand new tank unless it was brought in with something like plants, contaminated media, etc.

Scraping it off and siphoning it out, reducing the lighting period, increasing flow and eliminating dead zones, and balancing nutrients are ways to keep it at bay. A product to remove it would help but if the root causes aren't addressed it'll probably return.

Yeah I’m pretty sure it’s Cyanobacteria. It’s very bluish and slushy with some bubbles. I think I might have gotten it with some plants I planted. The tank has a lot of plants right now and that’s not helping. It also Has a couple of bladder snails. I did a recent water change and removed most of the floating plants ( which had most of the algae in in).

You really can’t see any in the tank right now because I cleaned most of it out, but it keeps coming back.

The tank has a filter. I had a sponge filter as for airation but I can’t get it to work so I’m waiting for some air pumps to come on the mail to place it again.

Wow! Lots of plants.

You can try blacking out the tank for several days, manual removal, then spot treating any stubborn areas with hydrogen peroxide. Or dosing the whole tank with peroxide as david1978 suggested. Or dose erythromycin, which is another popular treatment. All three options have worked for people.

Oh ok thank you everyone!
I’ll try the peroxide! Hopefully that and the sponge filter (once I get it up again ) will solve the issue.
