I'm asking because if it does ever happen, I want to know what to do. How long can the survive, what do I do with them, and generally what to do!

If it breaks you find out the problem and fix it. If you can't fix it, get another filter and transfer all of the filter media from the broken filter to the new filter.

As for long how it can survive, it depends what brand you have.

I'd say the best thing to do is take the filter media out, put it in a mesh or nylon bag and place it in your tank, have an airstone nearby to give the media with all the beneficial bacteria on it some water flow to help keep it alive, get a new filter as soon as possible and place the old media in the new filter.

This video is about power outages, but it has useful info about providing oxygen for your tank while you fix you filter or switch to a new one (as others have said, reuse your old filter media to keep beneficial bacteria).
