I initially thought about feeding worms from my back garden to my one goldfish but I didn't know if my parents had used weed killer or any nasty substances. are there any foods that are a good source of protein that is safe for goldfish? (excluding blood worms, brine shrimp, freeze dried worms etc)

As a balanced diet? Not really. You can feed cooked egg whites, but they really need a commercial food if kept in an aquarium to round out their diet. You could make your own gel food for them; you can search around for diy gel foods for goldfish. Some will add things like tuna, etc.

Goldish need more veggies then they do protein. You should only be feeding pellets or flakes 3-4 times a week and 3-4 times a week feed them veggies such as brocoli, carrots, zucchini, salad ect..

I heard that young goldfish need more protein in their diet so they grow so I was just wondering if I could feed anything else apart from protein but thanks

For my juvenile goldfish I feed them Repashy Super Gold with added Spirulina powder and powdered HikarI pellets (mainly because they are floating pellets and I don't like using them but wanted to get my monies worth). They love this.

I also give them so Spinach and peas each week along with frozen or freeze dried blood worms, daphnia, brine shrimp, black fly larvae, tubifex, algae pellets and fluval fancy goldfish sinking pellets.

Feed them smaller fish, eg baby guppies. Worms are good but I think the worms you find would be OK. I would imagine that your parents use lawn applications that are not so high in concentration that it affects the soil organism network.

You can feed them insects like flies, mosquitoes, weevils etc. Just make sure you haven't used a pesticide on them.
