What Fin Morphs Can I Breed With a Veiltail Betta?

Hello all,
I have a male veiltail betta that I want to use for breeding on account of his coloring. I have been told that I cannot breed a half moon betta with him, but I have never heard of a female veiltail betta, so what fin morphs can I breed with him without risking mutt fry?
Thanks!

I would say all bettas except those being line bred or “mutt bettas”. Any fin type can be crossed with another type, it’s just their fins will not be very good when only one parent is a VT. The VT genes are dominant so a cross with a HM will result is some funky tails that aren’t quite one or the other. Whatever you end up breeding him to will likely result in random colors unless you can find a female similar to him.

Unless you know you will be able to sell/rehome all possible young I would advise against breeding bettas. I’ve raised up a handful of spawns and it’s pretty darn hard to get them off my hands because while they are healthy they aren’t the fanciest colors. The betta market is so flooded with imported fish that it’s just hard to sell locally bred ones (or so seems to be the case).

There are female veiltail betta. This might help you identify the type of females. The problem is since most females don't have showy fins, it is harder to tell the tail types apart. Hope this helps
(Also, if you get her from a breeder then you can make 100% certain what tail type she is.)

Hmm, if there are no female veiltails, I am now curious what type my female Betta really is. She was sold as a female veiltail...

That wpuld be good in my part of the world where veiltails are usuall a 3rd to a tebth of the price of most the other tail types.

Thanks for the response! I think I'll just get another halfmoon male then.

Most fish keepers in my area seem to prefer to get their bettas from breeders and I'll probably sell online so I think I'll be fine. Thanks again!

Is it a trend that Bettas are bred back to the origin? I see a lot of halfmoon plakat with more manageable fin sizes.
