What exactly is an air stone? What are the benefits of putting one in your tank?

What it does is it sends bubbles from it to the surface creating surface agitation which allows oxygen to come in. It also looks nice. You can get a medium sized one for around $5.00 at Walmart. Make sure to get a pump and tubing for it to operate. Pumps are around $8.00 at Walmart you can get tubing for around $2.00 at Walmart.

Hello ann...

An air stone is a tank decoration that is attached to an air pump with a long piece of plastic tubing. The air pump forces air into the tube and through the air stone creating bubbles.

As for it's usefulness, it depends on your tank setup. If you have a standard filter system that creates good surface movement, then it will do the job of mixing oxygen into the tank water. So, the air stone isn't needed unless you like the bubble effect. If you run a sponge filter that's run by an air pump, then the air stone will increase the amount of oxygen that is mixed into the tank water.

Hello again ann...

There's a good sponge filter that's currently on sale online from Amazon. The item number is XY-2822. I've seen them work on You-Tube and they're inexpensive. I'm thinking seriously of adding one to each of my tank just to see how they work.

Your tank will need a 50 percent water change every 3 or 4 days to maintain healthy water conditions for whatever you want to live there. Hopefully, something very, very small.

I'm putting shrimp in, no fish I got the filter off of amazon for like three bucks and an air pump for like seven, so it's likely the same one. Would I need an air stone?

No. The sponge filter will likely provide more than enough air movement. My 10 gal sponge does more surface movement than my aqueon 10 hob.
