What else do I need for my 10 gallon tank?

Hi all,

I am getting 1-2 pea puffers in a 10 gallon tank and right now I believe the Marina LED Aquarium Kit is a good choice. I believe I will order an Aqua Clear 30 filter to replace the one that comes with it. In addition to a heater, gravel, plants, testing kits, what else do I need?

Thank you for your help

Get a API liquid testing kit not the strips.

I think you are good to go. If it is possible, having some fish medications on hand can be pretty handy.

Plant fertilizer (general consensus is that NilocG Thrive is the best), medicaton (puffers are notorious for having parasites), and some ramshorn snails to start a breeding population before you add your puffers.

The fish store that I am buying them from feeds them frozen brine shrimp or frozen blood worms. Do I need snails?

Snails make up a good portion of their diet in the wild. Puffers are surprisingly intelligent, and giving them prey to hunt and interact with enriches their environment. Also, puffer "teeth" never stop growing, and they need a way to keep it filed down. Bloodworms and brine shrimp are still great food for them that I would recommend, but they love snails.

Are you doing live plants or fake?
Haven't made this decision yet I will probably just do fake to make things easier for me since this is my first tank, and I believe the puffers are indifferent to it

What about a thermometer? No one mentioned that.

Get some Seachem Prime as your dechlorinator/ water conditioner. Are you doing a fishless cycle?
Yes, fishless. Thanks !

The tank I am getting comes with Fluval water conditioner, hopefully that's good enough?

Going to need some pure ammonia with no cleansers in it too. It won't bubble when you shake it.

PRIME is recommended because it will also temporarily put ammonia into a non-toxic form that bacteria can still use, which makes it one of the most useful things in an ammonia emergency besides water changes, but most any de-chlorinator is will work to remove chlorine. PRIME is also good if you have chloramine in your tap water, because it will break down into ammonia, and the PRIME will de-tox it long enough for the filter to get rid of the rest.

I personally really like growing live plants in my aquarium but fake are a lot easier. I don't know what pea puffers need in that regard but hopefully someone can chime in.

Good luck!!

Yes! I will read it over once more to make sure I fully understand and follow the steps accordingly.
