The standard is 30 gallons for the first, then 10 gallons each for every additional goldfish.

In general, 20g for the first and 10g for each additional fancy. The pros will say 20g PER fish. Others will go by 10g per fish. I say start with the 20-10-10 rule and always keep an open mind and be prepared for an upgrade if needed.

Depending on the size of the fish, a 5g temporary QT isn't the end of the world. Just keep way up on the water changes and get him in the pond as soon as you can.
