Well currently I'm on the hunt for a cichlid food for south American cichlids. No Northfin or NLS or hikari. Basically because none of my cichlids eat northfin or NLS and no hikarI since I already have there carno pellets and my fish hate cichlid staple and cichlid gold. So I'm looking for foods besides NLS northfin and hikarI but u can list them if u want
Jack Dempsey 4
severum 3 1/2
convict 3
so for these fish what size pellets should it be in between ex. 1mm-3mm

All of mine eat the Tetra cichlid pellets or sticks. I have a JD, Black Convict, GBRs, Angelfish, and Melanochromis Auratus right now. I likely missed a species.

The convict is 3-4 inches and the JD is about 7-8. It was seven last time I measured it.

wow how long did the JD take to get that big?
Did the tetra help improve its color?

I've had the JD about a year. I actually purchased him as a two inch Convict. All of their colors are vibrant. I knew I likely missed a species. I also have six inch Blood Parrots. The water is pristine.

He hasn't. He'll eat basically anything. We had company over not too long ago and a kid decided to stick their finger in the tank. Needless to say, he took a bite and left a scar.

lol wish my jack Dempsey was like that. Hes the only fish I have that doesn't eat cichlid gold. He doesn't even eat floating foods.

The Tetra cichlid sticks float like the pellets and eventually fall. The kind I have are designed to float. If in correct, some of the ingredients are suppose to make it more palatable.

I feed NLS, Omega One, HikarI and some Ken's formulas from Ken's fish. For fish the size of your's, small pellets will be fine or 1mm pellets. Most people feed pellets that are too large for their cichlids to eat easily. If your fish are chewing a lot or spitting them out a lot use a smaller pellet. My biggest cichlids are about 12" long and the biggest pellet they get are 4mm. There is a lot less waste when they can easily swallow a pellet instead of having to chew on it.

ok that's an issue I do have I used to feed my JD 5mm cichlid gold pellets. I didn't think it was an issue since he ate them whole thanks for the advice

I feed them I think 4mm pellets. It doesn't state the exact size. For my juvenile Angels and GBRs, I crush it a bit. If I had multiple size pellets, I'd need a true shelf. They stretch across the bottom of one of my 29 gallon stands.
