What Do I Feed My Panda Cories?

So, today I've bought 5 panda cories. I have Wardley Flakes, Top Fin Betta Bits, and Aqueon Algae Rounds. Do cories eat those three things or do I need to go out to buy some foods that cories will eat.

They will snack on flakes or bits that make it to the ground. But you should still give them their own food. You don't want to be overfeeding so that food can get to the bottom for the cories.

I feed my cories sinking shrimp pellets. They seem to enjoy all brands I have offered them. Wardley, omega one, hikari, aqueon etc. But make sure to get them shrimp pellets and not algae pellets or algae wafers. They need more than that in their diet!

I do HikarI Sinking Wafers (orange bag) for my Cory. My angelfish will often come and try to carry one of the pellets away once floating food is gone.

Today, I went out to buy Aqueon Shrimp Pellets. They took too long floating so my mollies, danios, and tetras will eat them before they drop to the ground. So, I found a way to make them sink instantly. So, I did that and I dropped the pellet right above where a school of my corys are settling. It sank instantly, and it dropped to the ground. My cories don't seem to notice it. Sometimes it will just come over sniffing it and then go away. And by then my mollies would find out and eat it. What do I do to get them to eat, or should I get another food for my corydoras?

Good question when I had an albino Cory he did not seem interested in the sinking pellets either. They would start to get fuzzy and I'd take them out. I would like to know this too.

Same brand?

Omega One was the brand I have. My tetras love them.

So, what did you finally feed the cory?

He liked the algae wafers. Unfortunately though I don't have him anymore.

I feed algae wafers for my mollies. My cories would come across it and would just go away.

He seems to like them but I know that wasn't the right diet for corys

I'm thinking that I'll get HikarI Sinking Wafers. Do cories eat this?

I think as long as it has some "meat" in it then it's good for them. I believe they are carnivores

You're welcome. Maybe some others can offer some advice as well.

Do they have it at Petco or Petsmart?

I don't think so. Amazon has it, as does my LFS.

So, my panda cories barely touch Aqueon Shrimp Pellets. What other types of food do you guys recommend for my cories.

I have cory catfish. Mine didn't eat anything in the first day when I got them. But eventually they will start eating if you keep dropping food on the gravel or sand for your corys to eat. That took a few days. It takes time for them to learn it is food. Now they pretty much eats anything I give them like algae wafers, Hik sinking wafers, Shrimp pellets, guppy flakes and pellets, brine shrimps, and dead shrimps.

Corys are active at night. You can turn off the lights and wait until all your your Mollies, Dainos, tetras fall asleep. Put some shrimp pellets and your corys will eat it. They have a very good nose.

Thanks

But my 5 mollies will find out and finish it before the cories come by. What should I do

I use the Wardley's Shrimp Pellets and Algae wafers for my Cory's they love them, but so do the rest of the fish. I started using the Algae wafers for the Oto's when I set of a bigger tank this year since it would have been limited on algae at the time. The Oto's did come out to eat for a few weeks, but now they stay in the back in all the plants doing their job.

Thanks for the reply. I don't even think they think that shrimp pellets are food or it's just the brand

Not sure about the Aqueon brand but the Omega One pellets will soften up and will be easier for the corys to eat. You could also crush them into bits and spread them around the tank. Corys love to scavenge and dig for little morsels of food.

I did not find the omega one so I bought hikarI sinking wafers. I dropped them right in front of their face and they didn't move

So they don't eat anything you drop in for them? How long have you had them?

Give them some time. Might want to crush the pellets/wafers as mentioned.

Did you have this problem before? If yes, how long did it take to get them to eat?

Not with my corys but my gourami didn't eat for the first 2 weeks that I had him. How are your water parameters? Are they otherwise active?

Currently doing water change

After water change nitrate is 40 ppm

You'll want to do at least another 50% wc to keep nitrates below 20. I wouldn't let it go above that. What are the ammonia and nitrites?

Ammonia are sometimes 0 or 0.25. Nitrite is 0. Last week I did a wc and the ammonia/nitrite was 0. After 6 days ammonia came to 0.25. Nitrite is still at 0. Did several wc to bring it to 0. After that, I tested it and they were at 0. Soon found my nitrates were high. I did 50% percent wc and it brought it from 160 to 40. Did another 25% wc and it's still at 40. Tested my tap and nitrates were 40. You know what's weird? In the past when I tested my aquarium, it said 5, 10, 20, or even 0. This morning I decided to test my fish water again. Ammonia looks between 0 and 0.25. Nitrite is zero. Nitrate is 40.

How do I keep ammonia at 0?

I think this was brought up in your other thread, correct? I'd look to cut down the feeding and increasing the % of water changes per week (Do a larger % at once and not several small ones). Once you make these changes, you should see a noticeable difference in your levels.

What is your filtration? What size tank was this again?

55 gallon, filtration is a hang on back filter

I tested my tap water and ammonia was 0.25 . do you think current ammonia is 0 or 0.25?

What's the gph on the filter?

If that's your nitrate level now, it looks like it's closer to 160. Did you test your tap for nitrates? Since the nitrates are that high right now, a sudden large water change could shock your fish. Start with 40% back to back... do one now, and then another one a couple of hours later. Keep doing them until your nitrates are below 20.

Edit: Ammonia looks like .50 to me. The bacteria should process that amount as the bacteria colony populates. Do you have Seachem Prime? I would dose that for the full tank volume to protect your fish.

I don't know the gph. I think it's 250. Nitrates from tap is 40

Those two things are also contributors to your issues. Recommended filtration is 8-10x your tank size so ideally, you'd want a total of 440-550gph.

I'd also look into getting live plants and pothos which is a great nitrate absorber along with nitrate reducing media like Seachem Matrix and/or API Nitra Zorb.
