What Can I Do For My Bettas At Work?

Hi, I work in my schools STEM department and we keep Betta Fish for labs.
I have my own 10G tank with One Betta and Nerite Snail, so I sorta know how to take care of them. But, I feel so bad for the betta's at my job. They are kept in 1G? tanks and look so bored.
We are supposed to feed them every day (we have two types of food -- small pellets and flakes), when I feed them I give them about 3-4 of the small pellets but I'm not always in charge of feeding them and some of my coworkers pour flakes into their tanks.
One of the fish stays at the bottom of the tank so we are not allowed to fill it up past a certain point.

What can I do for these bettas in terms of water changes? Right now the are supposed to be getting 1 water change a week and I don't really know if that is done because sometimes when I go to change their water it Stinks!
I joined this forum simply to ask what more I can be doing cause I feel so bad... I think I properly attached a photo of them, I'm not to sure how this website works
Any information would be helpful!

Thank you!

I'd try changing the water a bit more often, and would even ask if you could get a marmio moss ball for them.
Have you tried telling people that the tanks are bad for them?

I would show whoever is in charge this website and what proper betta care looks like. Hunt around on Facebook and Craigslist and see if you can find cheap tank setups that people are selling or giving away. Two bettas can even share a ten gallon divided with a dark divider!

In the meantime I would try and do water changes as often as possible. They are extremely hardy fish and should be able to make it 'til you can get them better habitats.

Yeah I have. My boss doesn’t really care. In the fall semester we have baby chicks and their living conditions aren’t ideal too.
I honestly doubt that I’d be able to get moss balls for them

Awwww poor guys! I would try to convince their owners to upgrade them or re-home them because this is cruel. But if you can't, 50% water changes are needed every day because of how small it is and there's no filter. Also try to get a higher quality of betta food because cheap food is mostly plant fillers which isn't healthy for them. I would also add some kind of cover for them in their tank. It's open and the fish feels so vulnerable. The one laying at the bottom should have his water level kept that way so he can reach the surface, but that means more water changes everyday (like 2 50% water changes everyday) because he has even less water to dilute any ammonia he produces which is poisonous to fish.

Animal behavior lab. The students like put mirrors in front of them and see how they act

I’ve suggested that in the past and even offered to pay with my own money but still got a no. It’s so upsetting cause I just want what’s best for them

You can try to start a fundraiser for getting them larger tank with filtration and heat. I would definitely donate! If not you can do daily %50 water changes. Just remember that when the betta is not put into the proper conditions you will not get reliable answers for their behavior.
