What books are you reading?

Reading is one of my favorite things to do! I could do it all day every day, hehe… right now I’m working on Becoming by Michelle Obama, the Shadow and Bone trilogy by Leigh Bardugo, the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth, The Hobbit (which I’m re-reading so I can start the Lord of the Rings series), Little Women, The Stranger in the Woods by Michael Finkel, Mary Oliver poetry, and a few others that I’m probably forgetting. When I read I like to alternate between books in case I get bored of one lol. Soon I’m hoping to re-read the Harry Potter series because it’s been a while since I’ve read them. Some of my favorite books include Watership Down by Richard Adams, Lord of the Flies, the Eragon series by Chris Colfer, and The War that Saved my Life by Kimberly Brubraker Bradly. Has anyone else read any good books lately? What are your favorite, or least favorite books? I started to read the Twilight saga and was not impressed, I quit after I was about 1/4 of the way through the first book…anyway, I thought it’d be cool to make a book thread and see what some of you guys like to read! Maybe we can nerd out on our favorite books together :)

I love the Stephen King Dark Tower series. (NOT the movie...lol) I liked Divergent and the Hunger Games too. Shadow and Bone was the best Netflix new series in a long time! Loved it! I bet the books are way better.

I haven’t watched the Netflix series because I prefer not to watch movies or shows that were books before (whole different conversation lol… I have a very strong opinion on how bad movies based on books are.) Not very impressed with the third Divergent book, I have to say. Hunger Games was so good! I’m listening to 11/22/63 by Stephen King on audio right now, he’s such a detailed writer. I doubt I’ll read any of his horror stories though because I absolutely hate horror stuff.

I would suggest not reading IT then...the book makes both versions of the movie seem like Sesame Street.

Currently diving into the monstrous book that is The Priory of the Orange Tree. It is going to take me awhile, but I will get through it. I'm so stoked!

I didn't even read this whole thing.

The Shadow and Bone trilogy is seriously one of my favorites. You are going to love the Grishaverse, I am not even exaggerating it is so skillfully created.

I like Stephen King and Dean Koontz. Never got into the dark Tower series though.
Lately I've been into Shari Lapena, Ruth Ware, Lisa Jewell...

AverageAquarist22 I don't know if I'd classify all of Stephen King's book as horror, Shawshank Redemption, Elevation comes to mind. 11/22/63 as well.

If any King fans want a real treat read Desperation and The Regulators (under the pseudonym Richard Bachman) back to back.

The only one of his i read under Bachman was The Running Man.

I enjoyed Bachman. I read the first couple books and told my husband He reminds me of Stephen King. Haha, at the time, who knew!

Joe Hill (his son) has a few I like as well.

I read most of the Bachman books, and a lot of his earlier novels. Of his early stuff, I thought that Salem's Lot was pretty scary, at least it was when I was a kid reading it (LOL)!

I really enjoyed The Talisman, a book that Stephen King wrote with Peter Straub. It's more fantasy than horror.

Watership Down was one of my favourite books when I was a kid! I should reread it some time soon. About to go figure out where I left off in the Lillian Jackson Braun "The Cat Who..." series. When I have more time off later this summer I'll be doing my every couple of years reread of Zelazny's Amber series.

Currently reading The Two of Us

A beautifully written, extremely witty...and devastatingly, heart wrenchingly sad...autobiography written by Sheila Hancock about her life with the late great John Thaw.

From their early days treading the boards at university to John's roles in The Sweeney and Morse, their home life, their children and ultimately John's diagnoses, treatment and death from cancer....and Sheila's life after his death with the help and support of the children and many friends.

It is a wonderful book that will have you in floods of tears...both with laughter and in grief.

Dang that should be the review put on the back of the book! That was super well written.
I could never write fiction. When I have to write essays and stuff I just have so much detail half of which is unneeded. Then it’s super long and I over analyze everything and take forever to write it. I like reading other peoples work, but not writing my own!

I did get a copy of The Betta Bible yesterday. I know that's not exactly super entertaining, but so far, it's got info that is new to me. Lots of science about genetics and how breeders have selectively bred bettas to get the different tail types. What can I say, really living life on the edge....:)

That actually sounds kind of interesting lol… I’ve been trying to get my hands on Diana Walstad’s book, but I can’t find it anywhere! Checked at the library, the used book store.. I can only find it on Amazon for $30 o.o I’m thinking of just abandoning Alliegant (the third Divergent book) because someone spoiled what happens at the end and it’s so boring now that I know what happens I don’t want to read it anymore. Just out of curiosity, has anyone read book(s) that are so good in the beginning but the author doesn’t know when to stop and the quality of the story just keeps going downhill? If that makes sense.. I’m reading a series like that rn and it’s so frustrating. Maybe I’ll have to give some of Stephen King’s other more fantasy like stories a try, they sound cool!

I was looking at the Walstad book too, and I agree that it is a bit pricey.
And after reading some of the Divergent books, I kind of put them down when I was on the 2nd novel. The trilogy distopia novels were all the rage a few years ago, but I just could not get into them that much.

If you do like fantasy, then you might like Stephen King's fantasy stuff. The follow up novel to the Talisman is Black House, so there are 2.

And if you know Stephen King, he must get paid by the page, so expect really thick books...:)

It took me forever to get through The Stand!

I've been recreational reading for about 50 years, and have quite a few authors I really enjoy. I've been reading science fiction for a long time, going back to when Isaac Asimov, Arthur Clarke, and Robert Heinlein were still writing (and Ray Bradbury, but I never cared for his stuff).

In recent years I've gotten more into military science fiction. David Weber is definitely my favorite in that category. He's probably best known for his Honor Harrington series, and it's very good, but he's written quite a bit of other stuff also, and it's all good. John Ringo has also written some good sci-fi, but he has one series that is by no means for readers of all ages that I don't care for. I made it about halfway through the first book in the series and stopped.

I also enjoy mysteries and adventure books. John Sandford is one current author whose new stuff I buy as soon as it comes out. Randy Wayne White was in that category for quite a while, but his stuff has kinda gone off the rails in the last few years. Much of it is still good, and I still buy some, but I don't mind waiting until I can get them used. John D. MacDonald was a big favorite for many years, and I still enjoy it, but it's starting to be dated so that younger readers might not appreciate it as much as I do. I really enjoyed Lee Child's Reacher books, and was saddened to see that he "retired" and turned the series over to his brother. I haven't even bothered to read the first installment he wrote. Elmore Leonard wrote some great stuff. Many of his fans might not know that when he was starting out he wrote some westerns. I have all of his that I'm aware of, and they're all good also.

Speaking of westerns, I've been enjoying them for quite a while also (40+ years). Louis L'Amour is probably the best known western author, and I have enjoyed almost all of his work (The Haunted Mesa was hard to finish), but there's no doubt in my mind that Elmer Kelton was better. His stuff was all well written, and his characters were believable. While his work is generally classified as westerns, his novels spanned from the early 1900's until well into the 20th century. In my opinion a better description of his work is well written novels and short stories that just happened to be set mostly in Texas in the second half of the 19th century instead of westerns.

I can't do that. When I start a book I almost always finish it before starting another one. If I do start another book before finishing the previous one I rarely go back and finish the first one.

They are all very different types of books so that helps. I have a daily meditation reading, usually some sort of Bible study book I read on once or twice a week, and then whatever book I'm reading. So not three plot lines or anything like that!

I have no books going right now, I’m super busy with work and family stuff. Then I have to go back to school in the fall too.

I read Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. I can’t even use words to describe how amazing it was. Amazing in the sense of heart wrenching. Some people will describe authors as painting pictures with words, but she paints emotions with words. I cried so many times, and I couldn’t read the next book because it literally tore out my heart, ripped it apart and stomped on it. But in a good way I mean. It made me so sad but that’s the best kind of book. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is dystopian, action packed, romance, and heart wrenching. My words don’t even begin to justify how amazing that book was. I highly highly highly recommend you guys put this in your list of books to read.

I’ll have to check it out, that sounds amazing! As if I need more books to feel devastated about, lol… I was reading a series and my favorite character died (I won’t say which series or which character because of spoilers,) but it ruined my day, I’m not joking… I barely remember what even happened in the rest of the book because I was so sad. The book didn’t seem worth reading after that! I think when there’s a character or something in a book that special to you it really shows what an amazing author the person is.
