What are the most peaceful fish you have ever kept?

I’ve been curious about the different kinds of really peaceful fish species there are, and I thought it would be fun to hear what everyone’s experiences have been.

For me:
Lambchop Rasboras, Trigonostigma espei: I kept a group of 10 of these guys in my 75 gallon. They were actually mislabeled as Harlequin Rasboras, it took me awhile to find out they were not the same thing. They are very tight schooling fish. I lost some to disease, and when I replaced them with Harlequin Rasboras I thought I’d gotten bullies or something because I saw them doing things like darting at other fish, which I’d never seen my Lambchops do. These guys always swim tightly together, they never so much as dart or display at each other. They are the epitome of peacefulness to me.

Gold Tetra, Hemigrammus rodwayi: I’ve had a school of 10 of these. Like the Lambchops, they never dart or bother anyone. But the reason they seem really peaceful to me is their behavior, not towards themselves, but towards other fish species. They have a tendency (at least mine do) to try and school with other mid-dwelling fish, and will happily swim about with them. At one time mine formed a school with themselves, the EspeI Rasboras, and Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish, this school lasted over a year and consisted of just over 2 dozen fish. Eventually though, the new Harlequins I got would chase and the Gold Tetras wouldn’t school with them anymore, and a new male Rainbow would corral the females away from the Gold Tetras, apparently more interested in a single-species school. The Gold Tetras will still swim in 1 big school with everyone after water changes though.

Corydoras Catfish – I have a group of around 14 Panda Cories. They are always bumbling around together, and they often look like they are actually playing. Never seen any aggression from them either, towards other fish or their own species. Adults will share a sinking wafer with fry the size of their caudal fin, it’s so cute.

So how about yours?

Good afternoon,

Silver Dollars are some of the most peaceful fish I have ever owned. They bother no one. Spawning time can be fun to watch, seeing them chase each other all over the tank, then spin in circles from the top of the tank to the bottom, stand side by side and just quiver. Too, the color changes during this period are pretty awesome.

Note: these fish are herbivores and live plants will probably not survive. I tested 10, 12" Java Ferns and they were gone in less than an hour.

I have a school of 8. Five of them are over 10 years old. Very hardy fish. Shy for a while and best kept in groups. Feed them fresh veggies along with a staple pellet and treats.

Ken

Panda cories (and most other cories) are probably the top of that list.

ive found that elephant nose fish are also very peaceful and reclusive.

Rainbowfish keep very much to themselves when given adequate space and quality. They are very investigative but not invansive and know their place

Other than that, most fish are peaceful or aggressive according to the environment they are under. My leopard pleco is the perfect example. He was just as peaceful in the 20 gallon as the panda cories, but when placed in the 55 gallon with malawi's who pestered him initially, he fought back.

Otos. I've never ever seen them eat or attack any other fish. They're the most safest fish I've seen. I constantly see them listed as safe tank mates for otherwise aggressive fish such as Dwarf Puffers, or tiny little shrimp like Red Cherry Shrimp.

I thought about dojos but they are social and can interact with other fish. Not that that means it's not peaceful, but I went with corys because they don't bother each other or other species. They are basically inert

I can agree with that, some weathers are a tad ignorant aswell so they as a whole can't be called peacful. Just my experince with them, I understand its a bit uncommon .

That's loaches in general I think. Ignorant is a good way to put it. They don't respect other fish's personal space

I find my gold barbs to be intresting, its not that they arnt peaceful its that they are kinda food hogs. If there's food they must have it, they really get on my DGs nerves sometimes, hes given them a nip here and there.

This is going to sound bad, but my little red male betta. Had him in a large community tank with mollies and stuff, then moved him to a smaller tank, and he started acting strange. Went and bought him some white cloud buddies, and he's as happy as can be! My blue betta would have to be pretty sweet too. He stayed with my glofish for a couple of days and just loved them zapping around!

My panda cories are very peaceful and so adorable.
My harlequin rasboras are peaceful too, they just stay together and never go after anyone else.
My neons are peaceful as well, they just stay together and ignore everyone else. I know people say they can be nippy, but I haven't seen that at all.
I wouldn't say my other fish are aggressive, but I would classify them as being brats every now and then.

Growing up my Black marble Angel Jewels(she was the sweetest fish ever I was so sad when she died but she got depressed after we loss her mate Henry to old age he was 7 yrs old she was 3 yrs old) and now my Betta Airey is very calm to the point he was getting picked on by my guppy Sapphires so he had to be moved to his own tank.

What defines "peacefull"?

To me, a peaceful fish is one that does not show aggression to other fish. One that won't fin nip, or be dangerously aggressive towards their mates, or constantly terrorize other fish, or chase a fish constantly to the point it harms the other, and one that doesn't routinely bully other fish from food etc. under normal circumstances. By normal, I am discounting situations like when one fish is so sick that it gets out competed by others for food.

Then my peaceful fish are: rasboras, neon tetras, glowlights, otos, and corydoras.

My endlers nip at my mystery snail so I wouldn't call them totally peaceful. Ans my snail is enormous compared to my endlers.
