What are scrubbers in Pool Filter Sand?

Quickrete pool filter sand says it contains scrubbers. Is that what feels sharp? If so what is it? Sand shouldn't be sharp but crushed stone would be. Is that what they are adding or is it crushed stone instead of sand?

or could it be a marketing gimmick to make folks think this pool filter sand is better than the other guys sand because it contains scrubbers the clean your pool water better....Just what advertising has led my mind to think about most questionable things written on packaging.

Are you actually feeling larger pieces in the sand? If so you may want to run it through a fine screen if you are going to have bottom feeders like corys in your tank.

That is some rough looking stuff. I have pool filter sand in my tank but it isn't the quickrete brand. Mine is a nice fine grained sand. I originally had a different sand in there but it was actually too fine and just water movement and cory action stirred it up so much it was getting into my filters impeller.

I’m currently waiting on nat geo sand to be delivered. Soon I hope. I wanted black but they’re sending white. Petsmart.

Hold out for what you want. Substrate changes suck.

If I ordered black and they sent me white I would not be a happy camper. I feel sure I would be sending it back on their dime and hold off until I got what I wanted to begin with but that is just me.

I agree with Wraithen Substrate changes do suck

Quikrete pool filter sand is a graded silica sand so it contains quartz. That's what would be sharp. Gotta love google.

That’s what the play sand bag has on it. Doesn’t say anything about scrubbers. This is the most horrible excuse for sand I’ve ever had. I’m holding out for real sand. Oh! I started taking it out of the aquarium last night. It stinks. Kind of like paraffin melting.

So how fine is too fine? Found some feels SO soft. Loving it. But will corys be ok with it? Very fine.

Really fine should be alright but if you have HOB filters be sure you situate the intake tubes at least 4 inches above the sand or it will be pulling lots of the sand up and into the filter. Sand is really rough on the impeller.

Yes. I’m going to add a prefilter as well. Which is a pain. Don’t know how long the intake tube on this new aquaclear is. Forty long so not high to start with. Have three options. Super soft dreamy play sand, nat geo white stuff, bdbs. Nat geo feels rough. Bdbs feels rough or powder depending on the bag. Nat geo raises ph but how much? My twenty nine stays at six.eight even with crushed coral. Just know the “new” pool filter sand sucks. Cut my fingers quite a bit getting it out of my aquarium.

Called number on bag. Told white particles crushed quartz. One hundred percent graded silica sand. Asked about the dark particles. Told another type sand. Still confused.

I was spoiled for 20 years. The company I worked for was mainly road construction but they owned quaries aswell. So I had natural options. One was pure sand, one was silica sand, one was crushed red stone and one was crushed limestone. All I needed was a bucket. The dark could be just another shade of sand.

What do you think of the so luxuriously soft sand for corys? It’s the softest sand I’ve ever felt. I’d love it on a beach!

No soaking your feet in the tank. Lol. As long as it doesn't stir up easy it should be fine. As far as the intake to your filter you could just use a section or two less or a prefilter. I went and felt the blue sand in my 29 and its pretty soft and fine. I never had an issue but filter intake is about six inches from the bottom since its a deep tank. Its gotta be better then when I used pond mud. Yea don't use pond mud.

Oh how funny you are! And just how did you know I wanted to put my feet in? You have corys in your twenty nine? I’m rinsing my sand today. If I can keep my bp measurable. Or if I get left alone for a while.

That is how my pool filter sand feels. I have neat little lawn cart that I used to rinse my sand. It is big enough to hold the whole 50lb bag of sand and with the slanted front was easy to pour the water off. While cleaning this sand I also played in it. Digging down into it with my hands while washing it. It is a very soft feeling sand, kinda like someone bagged it up off a pristine beach.

It seems there are different grades of pool filter sand. I can't remember the name of mine. It was just what out local hardware store had in stock. I am really glad I ended up with this instead of some of the one with sharp pieces in it. This one is a light tan color.

The aqua clear will likely come with 2 tubes and the u. The tubes are the same size, it's just to make it longer. Both have strainers on the end so you should be ok just using one.

I have not noticed nat geo changing my ph, but my ph is 7.6ish anyway.

If, after rinsing the sand, the bulk of it stays on the bottom easily you should be fine. If its silty you will have problems.

Just from testing one cup, I was left with a half a cup. Hmmmm.

Will the corys be ok with this fine sand? (My first try at sand can you tell?). I heard someone on here post their sand was so fine the Cory blew it through their gills.
