I had to take my old dog to the vets because he can’t stand or walk me and my mom and brother had to crane him with a comforter in and out the car, and he got a xray and test and ,I found out he has lymes they hydrated him with a iv and gave me 3 prescriptions and joint chews the xray showed his hips weren’t in the socket and he has narrowing between his spine disk or something, were gonna have to sling his back legs with a towel to take him outside for the potty this is just crazy I hope he can pull through.

They make male dog diaper wraps, I had to use them for my boy when his health was failing. They help with not having accidents in the house and stressing your dog out about that since they know they’re not supposed to. Hope he is on the mend soon!

His legs still work and he feels them but he doesnt want to use them until his meds kick in probally he didn’t like the meds, my mom wanted me to use peanut butter and I kept saying we need pill pockets and then he drank some water and puked his pills and food and now I have to re give him them with mushy wet food. I hope we will just get the pockets or this will be a long week

I use PB and also liverworst. (Sp?) to conceal pills. Sometimes cream cheese.

Was your dog diagnosed with Lymes when you brought him in for the present problems or previously? Are you saying, or is the vet saying Lyme’s caused the current problems? Sounds extreme if so.

It is very common for dogs to test positive for Lymes where I live and most are asymptomatic. Happened to my old girl.

i am so sorry your pooch isn’t doing well & hope the situation improves. How old is he?

All his other blood work was normal no heart worm and, they said he has old dog lung disease when they xrayed his lungs and said thats normal.

Agree. Very odd for a dog to show such an extreme diagnosis as a result of Lymes.

But, spinal lumbar stenosis is an affliction many GSD's get. And that would cause the failure of the rear legs, or reluctance for the dog to use those limbs.

Based on his age, I think you guys have the hard choice coming.

I’m hoping he can go on another year the vets were confident that they can help us and we are supposed to checkup with them in 2 weeks probably on the phone I’m not sure

As I was saying common DX. We took our very large, 125 pd, then 3 yr old Roti/Akita/German Shep into a new vet after we moved here because of a limp. Vet says she had Lymes and prescribes Doxy. Potent antibiotic. Waiting area full off people who said their dogs had Lymes as well & required routine blood work, exams, meds etc. this seemed highly unusual to me.

So I googled and learned many dogs in various states have been bitten by a deer tick, will test positive, but never get sick. Some vets play this as a big money maker, fundamentally dishonest. We researched more carefully and took her to a good vet who confirmed what I had read & told me to discontinue the doxy, which I had already done. Turns out she sprained her ankle running around with her brother in the yard. Never developed any Lyme symptoms.

Definitely not saying your vet’s a crook like that one, rather don’t worry about a Lyme DX. Usually meaningless.

This dog developed an incurable neurodegenerative disease about 10 years later. We had the vet come to the house with her assistant, followed by the pet cemetery people. Very sad day. About a year later her brother laid down on the floor for a nap and never woke up. Very sad, but glad we went fast. Life expectancy for very large dogs not as long as smaller ones.

Sixty Minutes, not even sure if it's still on, did a segment about 15 years ago.
They took a perfectly healthy dog to several veterinarians for a first time visit and just about all of them said the dog needed dental surgery.

Veterinarians, at least in my area, have a financial consultant tell them how much they need to make every time someone walks through the door. 10-12 years ago it was $180.

VetCor goes around buying up private practices. Monday morning the hospitals in their network have a meeting on how to raise profits. They have a monthly quota to meet to belong to VetCor.

And something to keep in mind, veterinarians do not take a Hippocratic oath like human doctors do. They have no moral code when it comes to treating their patients other than the doctor's own personal ethics.

So, you really need to have faith, not blind faith, that your pet's doctor has the dog's best interest in mind.
And you need to be honest with yourself that YOU have your pet's best interest in mind.

Just some things to weigh on your decision.

My mom paid for it all with care credit, and if I act like they are wrong she will argue with me and say idk what im talking about.

Maybe because I grew up rural where dogs were just more livestock, when I see a dog suffering in that kind of shape, it isn't a hard decision to make.

Every living thing crosses the rainbow bridge, and all dogs go to heaven.

I have a 14-15 year old goldendoodle who is mostly deaf. She has a lot of hip problems. I live rural to. no farm but I would never think of one of my 4 dogs as more livestock.

Actually, it can be longer. If we don't want to take the hour long detour, we have to go over our bridge, which is actually just gravel suspended over a couple of culverts, which will probably wash out tomorrow....

He’s been sleeping and drinking water, I think the pain meds absorbed he wont take the antibiotic or anti inflammatory after I retrieved it and put it in wet food. I’m gonna use pill pockets and liverwurst in the morning when I try again.

My hubby used cheese to feed the dog his meds.

My sister used to put it in some form of meat, like the liverwurst, and put it in the dogs mouth, and she would hold the muzzle pointed up, like towards the ceiling, and rub the dog's throat in order to get her to swallow. I saw that a few times, and it always seemed to work.

Good luck!!!!!!!

I gotta get him a cone so He stops licking his foot for a few days, and a sling to help walk him outside easier but, he’s being so good. He doesn't feel hot anymore even the inside of his ears so I think he’s better hydrated then before.

Just curious are you still in MD or PA. Will concur that central MD is a bit light on fish only stores. My closest is Rick’s Fish and Pets. It’s kinda old school but I do try to get things from there rather than online if possible.
