Weird Petsmart experience

About a week ago I went to my local Petsmart to pick up some supplies. While browsing the fish section I came across a lively African dwarf frog that I decided I wanted to purchase and quarantine so he could hopefully go into my current ADF tank (10 gallons). I rarely buy from petsmart or Petco but to be honest I fell in love with this frog and thought he’d be a great addition! I’ve also owned ADFs for 6 years so I felt prepared to treat anything he may come with.
I let an employee know that I was interested in buying a frog. Before he got the frog out, he asked me: what size tank I have and what other animals are in that tank. I was actually very happy he asked this since it’s important that fish go to proper set ups! I told him that I would be putting the frog in a 2.5 gallon quarantine for a while and then adding him to my 10 gallon aquarium with 1 other ADF in it (I had recently lost my second frog). He then refused to sell me the frog and told me that “these frogs are aggressive and will kill each other, so they can’t be kept together”. This was very shocking to me, considering ADFs tend to do best in groups and aren’t capable of doing much harm to each other since they have weak jaws, no teeth, and unusable claws. I tried to explain this to him but he just wouldn’t listen, I left the store very upset.
To put in perspective: this Petsmart shamelessly keeps their ADFs together, have a completely different species of frog pictured on their ADF caresheet, sells fish to people who are buying a brand new tank that same day, and believes that African dwarf frogs are very aggressive towards each other.
I’ll be honest I was thinking about this for a while because it just didn’t make any sense to me. Even though I have 6 years of experience and research with this species, that employee made me feel like someone who impulse buys animals without doing research. Through this experience, I even found that Petsmarts online care guide says that ADFs can be kept together (ACFs are invasive in my state, so I don’t think there was confusion there).
Anyway, sorry for my long rant! If anyone has suggestions on what I could do on this issue that would be appreciated and if you’ve had a similar experience at Petsmart let me know!

I think I would print out all the relevant information on these frogs and take it back to the store. I would ask to speak to the manager. It sounds to me like this employee pretends to know much more than he actually knows. I would be very upset too.

It is good that some stores try to look out for the pets they are selling but they need to get their facts straight.

Not PetSmart, but at Petco, I overheard a customer being told by petco’s “aquatic expert” that goldfish would be fine in a 10 gallon tank. I told the lady later on that goldfish need a MINIMUM of 20 gallons, but more is better.

She wouldn’t respond to me.

Now I only go to petco for equipment.

(every time I go into my petco, there’s always dead fish in their tanks. It’s quite sad.)

PetSmart sells a 10 gallon aquarium (just the aquarium itself, actually), and it comes with a huge label wrapped around it saying that you can keep goldfish in it. I know it's absolutely incorrect, but I can see why some people might think that.

 

Hi, if you have issues with a particular store then I would suggest you go back to that store & speak to the manager, that way he will know of your concerns & be able to address them.
