Weird Fish Things That You’ve Heard

Hello Fellow Fishlorians!

What are some of the weirdest fish things that you've heard?

On Amazon, there is a review of the Tetra preset 50w Heater.

This guy was saying, “ It shouldn’t be at 78 degrees because fish like discus and flowerhorn need higher temps”.

I was so tempted to ask him why he said that for a heater meant for a 10 gallon tank.

" Goldfish can't possibly need 29 gallons! They only are this big![motioned about two inches with hands]"

Also-

" I got this cool betta falls fish tank, it can hold 5 bettas!"
Meanwhile they each have a quarter gallon of space, and the possibility of getting into each other's sections.

Why can't they be both?

Bumblebee goby? - I want one but to me is unrealistic because I haven't found decent information yet and there seems to be tons of misinformation on them. its a mystery

A LFS employee said soemthing to this affect- “you need to cycle the tank, so you can use the water from the betta cups that your bettas came in to jump start it.”
Also- “a clown loach can go in a 10g, they grow really slow.”
LPS employee, I showed her that the betta marked ‘male’ was a female and she asked how do you tell. She was supposed to be the specialist and I don’t really blame her or anything as that’s something that definitely wouldn’t be taught at all. Just kind of shows how little LPS and LFS employees typically don’t know.

Greg, well, that can be true. Bn’s and clowns typically do well in communities.

I laughed so dang hard, that's not right.

I think one of the weirdest and creepiest things I've heard so far is someone trying to dump a 2 foot long red tail catfish into the TN river...

Wow were to even start. Lol. I have proved a lot of "facts" untrue about bettas.

There is a lot of them to prove wrong!

I did stack the deck in my favor with tank size but still. So far nobody drowned, 2 males can be in the same tank with girls. I even had a betta born in the tank. The tank is so interesting. Its been up and running a little over 2 years so I would say its a success.

"Can I put 10 (obviously male) dwarf gouramis in my 20 gallon? They seem to be getting along here."
The PetSmart guy said that he didn't know so I said that they would kill each other, but I think they took the fish anyways.

"This is a GREAT betta tank!" *points to cheap plastic thing* but I'm sure almost everyone's heard that!

I had a conversation with a Petsmart employee...
Me:I'm cycling my tank first then getting fish after its cycled
Employee: What?
Me:a fish tank needs to be cycled because of the ammonia fish give off, (then I explained the nitrogen cycle)
Employee: Okay?
Me:I'm gunna go now...
BTW I was 10 when I had this conversation, my dad was standing beside me watching me tell a Petsmart employee how to care for fish, then I explained to my dad that most pet store employees don't know anything (except for those few people that are actually knowledgeable about the pets they sell)

I had a lady at petco tell me I couldn't buy 3 bettas because I was putting them in a big tank and they would drown. Lol.

Here's a conversation I had at my local chain store after seeing the Betta with some of the worse fin-rot I've ever seen :

Me : this betta is going to die, in the states chain stores will usually give Betta's to customers before euthanizing them if they're clearly going to die.
Worker : uh let me ask my manager
* comes back 2 mins later
Worker : sorry we can't give it to you, if we show proof that the Betta died then they're insured so we get paid for them anyways.
Me : *fuming so we buy him for $1 cheaper*

It's cruel for the "cheap" fish!

Why should a fish's cost hinder their quality of life?

Cause in a lot of cases, a cheaper fish is a hardier fish. A $1 goldfish is able to survive in a small gallon bowl, no filter or waterchanges - cause lets be real, who hasn't heard of that? - in comparison to a $100 show quality fish (goldfish or practically any other fish, heck a $5 kuhlI loach...). As long as the cheap fish is looked after - close monitoring of the water values, then why isn't it fine? Its better to waste a couple of bucks rather than a couple 100 for those that insist on the in tank cycling methods.

Granted some fish are better suited to a new or cycling tank but price is hardly a way to determine that. The biggest thing that irks me and I have seen it suggested here a few times. Get cheap hardy fish to cycle your tank then take them back and get the fish you want.

Keep in mind that these are the same people that thought that bettas would drown in a large tank.

in petco's employees defense, they are part time minimum wage workers. There is little to no incentives for them to learn this stuff so why bother.

Here's one I forgot :

Me : do you have any Bolivian Rams?
Petsmart worker : what is that..?
Me : it's a South-American cichlid...
Petsmart worker : *checks 20 different tanks in the African cichlids section* Sorry we don't have any!
Me : thanks.....

I find the Bolivian Rams two feet away a minute later.

I have this problem with my lfs. Haven't had this issue with petco/petsmart yet lol.

My favorite is when they try and educate you about the fish they didn't even know existed two minutes ago.

PetCo Employee - "Now, you'll want to cycle your tank for a good 24 hours, before you actually add any fish" "Just use some water conditioner, and just let it run for a day, then you'll be ready for fish"

I agreed with him, and said okay.
Went home, and did it the right way!

"What's that brown plate on your giant snail?"

I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be the trapdoor.
