Weird Film On Water Surface

In my 5.5 G betta tank there is a weird film on the water surface. Kind of like when you make beans, they’ve been sitting out for a while, someone gets more and you can literally peel back the surface. It’s like that except it’s not a thick and it flakes. I don’t know how else to describe it. So I scooped off the surface water yesterday and replaced it with new. Now it’s back. Sorry for bad pics. Second one is when I run my finger through water. Does anyone know what this is? Thanks!

Ok I know the problem, you need a filter or a air stone. That happened to one of my 10 gallons. It happens when the water surface doesn’t move, algae builds up.
I hope this was helpful!

Thank you! I have a 10 g silent stream filter but the current was too strong for my betta so I put pantyhose over the output. Is this right?

When was last time you cooked some beans in your tank?

just playing, that’s just biofilm that occurs when you don’t have any surface agitation. It’s not harmful but it’s ugly. And the only way I know how to remove it is by having something break the surface.

ya or if you're filter has some air time before it hits the surface that could work as well.

I added an air stone. It cleared it up in a few minutes. Will the air stone cause trouble for him to swim? He’s a plakat but he’s also recovering from fin rot. Will this hinder tail regrowing?

I’m so glad that it’s harmless but also a little mad... he used to live happy and healthy in a 10 G but that same thing happened. I panicked and thought it was the silicon breaking down and threw all that stuff away which I now know was for no reason lol

This won’t hinder the growth. Some bettas actually like playing in the bubbles, mine do. With a 5.5 gallon, the water shouldnt move enough for him to have trouble swimming.

My betta is recovering from a tankmate that nipped her fins, and the air stone hasn’t effected her at all.
