Wave Maker and Fish Question

HI All, I have a few questions:

1. I am getting my first Powerhead Wavemaker in from Amazon this Sunday. I am going to run it on my 125G long tank. It is rated at 3200 GPH. My question is what tips and opinions do you have on general set up of it? Location? Angle? etc. It is a dual head system, the Hygger 16W/24W Powerhead. Also, I am running two sponge filters in the tank, one HOB filter on one side of the tank and a Fluval 406 Canister Filter on the other side of the tank.

2. My other question is on the Rope Fish. I have had one in my tank for several weeks now and I just want to make sure what it is doing is "normal behavior." At time it will slither around the top of the tank very sluggishly, then slowly go down to the bottom of the tank (most concerning), other times it will be moving around pretty rapidly, darting from the bottom of the tank to the top of the tank, other times it will swim around normally, and lastly, it will hide within the rocks or other decorations in the tank. I feel like all of this is normal except when it starts to look super sluggish....... is that normal for that fish?

I appreciate everyone's opinion

1. Hi, not to be rude, but even though you are getting one, and they help your fish being active, they tend to have many problems, and sometimes do not work. 2. When moving through water slowly, the ropefish tends to use its pectoral fins, changing to an eel-like form of swimming, slowly. I do belive that’s it.

Hope this helps,

Christian

Christian, thank you for the info. What problems are you referring to that the Powerheads tend to have?

Hi! Many of them tend to stop moving all just by a month, and end up returning them. Replacing the motors can be expensive if/when it does break. Kind of a hit or miss..

alright, good to know for some things to look out for. Have you ran them before? Should they be ran 24/7 in the tank or do you put them on a timer so they turn off at night or something to give the fish a break?

Hi, I have not, but know a lot about them due to consideration and research. Ok, I think of it this way: in the ocean, the waves would not turn off, so keep it on all the time, even when feeding.

Though, if you do go on vacations, get a timer to turn it off for a bit in case something goes wrong. Then you won’t have to worry. Be aware that the cost of replacing the motor is $25, but I do not mean you to go away from your decision. But i’d suggest that starting out, turn it off while you feed the fish. Let it get used to the wavemaker, then try it 24/7.

I appreciate it, the one I got on Amazon was $25.00 and had almost 5 stars with a ton of good reviews. Honestly, if it doesn't work out, I am only out $25 and it is what it is lol

Good deal. Good luck, post here if any issues. Here in CA, we are able to return things from Amazon too..

I have been using them in 3 of my 55 gallon tanks for years, I get about 5-7 years out of them. I leave them on 24/7 there not very strong, just enough to move my live plants and give the fish a little stream to swim against. I keep mine about 3-4" down on the side of the glass in the middle of the tank and face it towards the front of the glass.
